Pencil Portraits

Pencil Portraits I'm Hayley.

I love pencils and erasers...so I fancy use them :)

I also love my kids and the amazing Mike Winslow, Coke Zero, Pomegranate Green Tea, my doggo, and the fat cat that crashes at my house.

This is one of my dear students. it was an honor to draw a portrait of this sweet boy upon his shocking and untimely passing.

As I drew this, I felt as though he was seeing the heavens. I felt the love of God. It was humbling and sacred.

Can I draw older individuals? Yes.

This is a portrait of my Grandpa. I love drawing people that have more details in their faces. The shadows and lines provide more realism and character.

After my brothers death and service, I took more time and drew him as a child.

This is how I always want to remember him.

Drawing became a coping skill for me when my brother was found dead by su***de exactly 2 yrs ago.

This was not my best work. I was traumatized and in deep despair. I drew fast and my mind was in chaos. I had to start over in fact. Drawing him was a way I could serve him one last time and it gave me a way to connect to him.

His death changed me and oh how I miss him! As I’ve looked at his face and cried for him this last week, I’ve wanted so badly to see him again.

I draw primarily using rolled paper stubs and erasers. Yep....erasers. After I measure everything, I use different pencils and build layers of graphite on a piece of printer paper then rub the stubs on the graphite. The stubs then become my pencils and I softly add the graphite to change the values in the picture. I use the erasers to lift values that are too dark and create lines and bright spots (short version).

This is arguably my favorite portrait. Look at those tears! This is my darling nephew who is now 14!

This is my awesome oldest kiddo when he was younger (I really need to update their portraits)! I actually started his picture twice. I had an artists block and it was hard to draw him accurately. I still look at this one and I want to fix it!🤪😅

This is my sweet girl when she was in 9th grade. She hated her teeth at the time and asked me not to draw them. The magic of art is it can be an impression of what we see and it can even build the self-esteem of a young child :)

I loved to draw as a kid! Cartoons were my fav! I also realized I was able to draw whatever I could see (not always accurately). I met the amazing Mike Miller and he helped me take my drawings to the next level.

The outcome depends on the first step of measuring. If the measuring is sloppy, there is no accuracy in the end result. This shows the process of one of my first legit pieces. This is my youngest son when he was about 10 years old. He's so dang cUte!
