The street is the canvas this Saturday! The Chalk Art Festival returns to The Gateway Sept. 5 — and it's FREE.

Watch 22 artists turn pavement into masterpieces from 10am–6pm. Kids get in on it too: the Kids Corner has outlines to color in (or outside of — we don't judge 😄), free chalk to play with, and art teachers sharing tips and tricks.

Gallenson’s has been an anchor near the corner of 2nd and 2nd in downtown Salt Lake City since 1916, and local muralist Ben Wiemeyer has turned the whole building into a canvas honoring that legacy. Ben Wiemeyer’s design wraps around almost every side of the shop; each piece nods to the history, grit, and craft that have kept Gallenson’s a Salt Lake City institution for over a century.

Next time you’re downtown, swing by Gallenson’s and check out the storefront mural in person. If you’re ever looking down on the area from a few floors up, look for the mural stretched across the entire roof. Most people who walk past Gallenson’s every day have no idea it’s even there.

Indigo Cook recently returned to Salt Lake City after receiving their master’s from Duke. This summer they staged a work in a small Downtown alley that made us emotional.
So, we’re excited to see the latest collaboration between their company, Interdisciplinary Arts Collective and UMOCA on Friday at 6pm. A world premiere using Cornelius Cardew’s seminal 1967 score, Treatise, presented in dialogue with the National Gallery of Art’s loan of Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawing No. 309. The evening will travel throughout the museum space. Audience members are encouraged to move freely and may enter and exit the space during the 2-hour show.

Clark Planetarium has something for everyone. In the immersive Dome Theater, Encounters in the Milky Way takes viewers on a time traveling journey with data provided by the European Space Agency's Gaia mission, dubbed the "billion-star survey" which mapped the precise positions, distances, and motions of nearly 2 billion stars in our galaxy. 1, 3, and 5pm shows.
