I opened Arts Up Gallery with our famous mascot “Headless Betty” - a life-sized Betty Boop statue that greeted visitors with open arms and was beheaded 20 years ago this a July in Virginia Beach, making national headlines (no pun intended) and prompting Boop creators, Fleischer Studios, to offer a reward for the return of the head. The 1st exhibit - during Covid - made front page news (as shown), sprung from a 1” fragment of the vandalized statue that a journalist saw and requested an interview. The gallery itself came about after a series of rejections to exhibit in my hometown. 🎭🎨🆒

Last night upon leaving work I heard a loud crackling sound - a huge tree too fell on the graveyard , the only building that escaped substantial damage during the Revolutionary War fires that nearly destroyed the entire town. ☔️🌊❤️‍🔥

During probably the worst snow storm in 20 years in 2015, during a move from Lynnhaven to Pembroke, we already had the moving trucks break down. So stranded for a bit while AAA tries to get trucks started, I waited in my suv and drew, but the pens were too cold too, working only intermittently.

Writing this book was an eerie journey. Having lived my teenage years on the river - Witch Duck Bay - where Grace Sherwood was famously ducked in 1706, and consequently deemed a witch (as she failed the trial by water test by floating to the surface) and imprisoned for about 8 years, I wrote “Curse of Witchduck,” prompted by the mysterious vanishing of my original portrait of the “Witch of Pungo” that became the cover of the book. Things became more eerie when the compensation check for the “loss” of original art, was dated the same day Grace Sherwood received her rare compensation in court (back in 1705). The bizarre things happening during the writing process continued. You have a little more time to visit the exhibit before it ends soon

Something inside was driving me to draw when I was before a table. It started way back as a child as indicated here in a Norfolk (VA) teacher’s comments to my parents. And even later as a fast-food artist, I didn’t really go there to eat, but to draw. I did often purchase coffee, but to use as a wash…and out of courtesy, to “rent” studio space when I had none.

First Night Norfolk was a way for Tidewater to celebrate a non-alcoholic New Years Celebration. I dedicated my design to my grandfather who was Hampton Road’s bravest copper, a charter member of the FOP, and according to the press - the Original Tough Copper. He saved drowning swimmers, nabbed bank robbers, etc., and flew thru the air launching from his Norfolk motorcycle onto the running boards of fleeing bootleggers. This was years before Batman flew thru the air. Bearing no fear, he never ran away from any of it. He tossed many of those living high on the hog off illegal activities while good folks went hungry during the Great Depression, into jail. After my design won the Grand Prize, Norfolk postponed First Night till the following year due to shortage of city funds. Years earlier, when Hollywood flew down to interview granddad, he said he’d have to sport shades to fit in with the jet set. Soon thereafter the TV series Chips came out.
