We can’t wait to listen to Smiley and the Lovedawg during (near the stage) on Saturday! 🎶

Chris Durman and Steve White aka Smiley and the Lovedawg have been friends for over forty-five years, and they have been playing music together for almost as long.

Chris writes many of the songs, sings, and plays guitar; Steve sings harmony and plays the mandolin, slide-mandolin, guitar, and fiddle. While he has a natural rapport with any string instrument, Steve stands out from the crowd when playing the mandolin.

They play a somewhat eclectic mix of acoustic folk, rock, bluegrass, blues, rags, and older country interspersed with as many of their own songs as the audiences will bear at the bars, weddings, festivals, coffeehouses, and house parties where they play.

They suspect that they probably sound like the East Tennessee valley where they’re from with melodies, rhythms, and images from Appalachia mixed with the sensibilities and concerns of factory towns, polluted and otherwise affected by a variety of outside influences.

There are two performances lined up at Blount Mansion for Make Music Knoxville Day on Saturday, June 21st.

🕰️ 10:30-11:30am: 🎶 Hear a performance and discussion from S.O.U.L.S., a 501-(c)(3), non-profit corporation passionately founded with the purpose of providing opportunities for culturally diverse East Tennessee youth, ages 9-18, to build relational bonds through music and leadership training.

🕰️ 11:30-12:30: 🎸 Roger Wallace has something rare in country music today: honesty, creativity, and more than enough talent to back it all up. You could say it’s all in the voice — and not just the powerful, rangy singing voice that has gained acclaim in roots-country circles for well over a decade.

Friends: Nick Horner here. Just want to let you all know (formally) that there is no Carol Cart for 2023! These events are only made possible by either substantial financial support and/or community support. Unfortunately, my adjustment to grad school (as well as a series of other life events) have left me without time or energy to fundraise and be an active member of the Knoxville music community. My hope was to draw together something informal for those diehards who were enthusiastic about joining us on December 21st, but a lot of folks are out of town, booked up, or doing other fun, incredible things for the holidays.

If you're a passionate Carol Cart-er, never fear! I'm certain we'll be back in 2024 (now that I know what to expect from the academic experience)! Happy holidays, everybody, and if you need a little holiday cheer, check out all of these fabulous videos and songs from 2022 (linked in comments)!
