Romeo Robinson
Romeo enjoys connecting with people and finds the human condition—our problems, emotions, thoughts, and the ways we express and navigate them—to be fertile ground for endless creative exploration. Working primarily in mixed media, their present-day preferences include acrylic, charcoal, pastel, and collage. They describe their methodology as “controlled chaos,” defined as the manipulation of color, images, words, and phrases in a seemingly random manner to create narrative. These narratives explore the human condition, both its beauty and its challenges. Through painting, the artist seeks to understand what is happening in the world and why. Themes of particular interest include racism, immigration, self-worth and belonging in adolescence, and hunger. Their goal is to continue growing as an artist and to become ever more effective at telling these stories.
Romeo began their creative journey in New York City at the Germaine School of Photography in the late 1970s. After moving to Houston, they pursued studies at San Jacinto College in both legal assisting and art. A decade ago, they began classes at the MFAH Glassell School of Art and, in 2019, completed the Block program. Their work has been exhibited at the San Jacinto College Gallery, the San Jacinto College Library, various VAA exhibitions, Carolyn Garcia Gallery, the Houston City Wide African American Artists Exhibition, the Houston Museum of African American Culture, the gallery space at West Gray Dental, and at the NCV Wine facility.
The artist values the opportunity to share their work and to invite viewers into a deeper understanding of their creative practice.
