It’s All Greek to Me!
Repoussé is formed by hammering or pressing metal from the reverse side, giving an object a three-dimensional effect as seen in this beautiful 19th-century silver icon. For years, it was assumed to picture the birth of the Virgin Mary, until a Greek inscription (on the object itself) was translated to reveal its true New Testament subject.
