"The Last Five Years" 17 by Jason Robert Brown's will be on stage at STUDIO THEATER IN EXILE at Hudson Valley MOCA

The musical explores the five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, an aspiring writer, and Cathy Hiatt, an aspiring actress. The unique aspect of this musical is its non-linear narrative, as it tells the story of their relationship from two different perspectives:

1. Jamie's Perspective: The story starts from the beginning of their relationship and moves forward chronologically. It follows Jamie's journey as he meets Cathy, falls in love with her, and progresses through their relationship.

2. Cathy's Perspective: The story starts at the end of their relationship and moves backward in time. It shows Cathy's emotions and experiences, starting from their separation and moving towards the hopeful beginnings of their love.

The musical explores the joys and struggles of love, the challenges of pursuing individual dreams, and the complexities of maintaining a relationship over time.
The emotional impact of the story is intensified by the contrasting perspectives of the characters.

Playbill’s 30-DAY SONG CHALLENGE - Day 30 “A song you’d be able to perform flawlessly tonight”

Flawlessly...hmm...maybe if it wasn’t to a pre-recorded track through airbuds! But in all seriousness, I had to go as as possible for the last day of this challenge. “Man Of LaMancha” has always been one of my father’s favorite musicals so it is one of the earlier cast recordings I had ringing in my ear as a wee young lad. I’m sure it’s no surprise to anyone that the role of Aldonza was always what stuck out to me the most. In addition to celebrating these favorite obscure musicals of mine, I also had some fun tributing to some wonderful roles for the leading lady - a skill I lack in visually. This lewk could never have been possible without the fabulous artistry of my best friend, Markiss Robert and I cannot thank him enough for supporting my insanity in finishing this challenge off with a bang. Thank you all for tuning in now go educate yourself and check out some of these glorious shows!

Playbill’s 30-DAY SONG CHALLENGE - Day 29 “A song from a musical you want revived”

I am still kicking myself to this day for not seeing this off b’way after seeing the show clips from opening night. I had just started my LaChiusa education and (between this and “Bernarda Alba”) I regrettably had the chance and didn’t take it to see his great work live in its first NY incarnations. Regardless, the cast recording of “See What I Wanna See” has been on repeat for years and this was the first song I loved singing along to. It was extra exciting for me as another one of my former cast mates, Aaron Lohr, originated the role. The rest of the score is insanely good with some stellar performances and, like yesterday’s show, is comprised of two one-act musicals. I’ve only got one day left (thank goodness) so this is my last preach to go listen and explore some of these fascinating, intelligent, beautiful obscure works (especially those of LaChiusa!)

Playbill’s 30-DAY SONG CHALLENGE - Day 27 “A cover of a song from a musical”

I don’t have much to say about this one since I’m getting to the end of this challenge and very much so losing my mind a little as it is. I love “Follies,” I love this song, and I love that I discovered this nostalgic Pet-Shop-Boys/Liza Minnelli 80’s cover when I was living in the city after high school. It was perfect timing. I decided to play with the limited “pause editing” again but it didn’t go as smoothly as last time. But I figured the amount times my phone dropped was justified by the overall ridiculousness of the song. So this is nowhere near what I intended it to be but my brain is just a little too exhausted from this day-to-day challenge and I just didn’t feel like attempting it again... so, perfectly imperfect it is!
