MAKEart studios A small, home art studio in Downers Grove. MAKE provides high quality art instruction + workshops

Make is a small studio that provides art instruction and workshops taught in small groups. Taught by art educator and professional artist, Heather Klausa, she encourages young and old to make time to create and uses her home studio as a meeting space. Whether you are interested in improving your technique, learning a new skill, tackling a pinterest project, or simply looking for a space to relax from a long week, MAKEart Studios is a great place to start.

This week’s Studio Practice Intensive gave a small group of teen and high school artists something that can be hard to find in summer: focused studio time.

Students worked from their own interests while building studio routines: sketchbooks, reference images, material exploration, revision, critique, and time to follow an idea further.

The work was different for each artist, but the goal was shared: slow down, pay attention, build skills, and begin to recognize what keeps pulling them back.

A strong start to summer art practice at MAKEart Studios.

Artists need other artists.

A good critique isn’t about finding what’s wrong.

It’s about seeing your work through someone else’s eyes.

A sketchbook. A question. A few uninterrupted hours to make art.

Day one of Studio Practice Intensive focused on artistic voice, observation, and establishing a creative practice for the summer.

Not just making artwork.

Building the habits that make artwork possible.

We noticed these outside the Pocket Gallery this morning.

The gallery is currently preparing for its first exhibition. Artwork has begun arriving, the installation crew has been busy, and now this.

We can’t help but wonder who has been stopping by.

Do you have an art studio in your kitchen?

Turns out creativity likes to hang out where it’s easy to reach.

Leave a few supplies out long enough and people tend to join what’s already in progress.

No instructions taped to the wall. No perfectly planned activity.

Just color sitting in plain sight, waiting for someone to pick it up.

A doodle started while toast was cooking. Collages appearing beside cereal bowls.

Do you have a version of a tabletop Studio in your house? If so, what’s in yours?

There’s something very good happening here.

Tiny sculpted buttons. A face with real personality. Hair that required actual problem-solving. A dress that started as one idea and became something better through making.

This is the part of art class I love most: when students slow down enough to notice what their work needs next.

Small hands. Big decisions.

You’re invited.

The MAKEart Studios Front Porch Art Sale starts this week and is exactly what it sounds like: piles of original artwork, class samples, experiments, paintings, prints, odd little extras, and things I just can’t justify storing anymore.

Some pieces are finished works, some are studies, some are beautiful mistakes. All are looking for a second life outside the studio.

Pay what you want. Cash, Venmo, check, take-a-stack-and-run-energy all welcome.

Come dig through the bins, sit on the porch for a minute, and maybe leave with something or somethings.
