The Art Center is excited to open Beyond the Surface: National Mixed Media Exhibition, featuring an incredible collection of work by artists from across the country.

This exhibition truly celebrates what mixed media is all about. Paint, collage, fiber, assemblage, found objects, sculpture, and unexpected materials come together in works that are bold, imaginative, thought-provoking, and wonderfully diverse.

As you walk through the gallery, there is something new around every corner. Some pieces command the room, while others draw you in to discover intricate layers, textures, and details. The photographs give you a glimpse, but this is an exhibition that really needs to be experienced in person!

We are thrilled to share this remarkable collection of work selected by our juror, Dennis Cardalisco.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Aleka Munroe, who passed away yesterday morning.

Aleka was a longtime member and Resident Artist of The Art Center. She had been part of our community since we first opened, and more than a year ago, she moved her home studio to The Art Center Loft, where she continued creating her beautiful botanical artwork.

Aleka was active in the local arts community and served on the Dover Arts Commission. Her creativity, friendship, and dedication to the arts will be deeply missed.

The Art Center will honor Aleka’s life and artistic legacy with a solo exhibition in the near future.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and everyone whose life she touched.

Beyond the Surface: A Mixed Media Exhibition

Open to all artists residing in the United States, age 18 and older.
The Art Center invites artists to submit work for Beyond the Surface: A Mixed Media Exhibition, a national juried exhibition exploring the limitless possibilities that emerge when artists combine materials, techniques, and ideas.

Exhibition - September 8 - October 31, 2026
Submissions Due – August 16, 2026 , 11:59PM

Entry Fee
Non-Members: $30 USD for up to three (3) submissions.
Art Center Members: No entry fee. Membership must be current.

Exhibition Juror
Dennis Cardalisco is a contemporary artist with more than 40 years of experience in the visual arts. He studied at the Museum School at Tufts University and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
Awards
Best in Show – First Place Awarded to the artwork that demonstrates exceptional creativity, technical achievement, and overall excellence in mixed media.
Juror's Choice Award - Selected by the exhibition juror, Dennis Cardalisco, in recognition of outstanding artistic merit, originality, and creative expression.
People's Choice Award: Selected by exhibition visitors and awarded to the artist whose work receives the most votes during the exhibition.
