The City of Dothan is inviting residents and visitors to celebrate the end of summer with an evening of free, family-friendly bluegrass music at Porter Park on Saturday, August 29.

The all-ages event will feature live performances from rising young bluegrass artist Shay Morgan, with local favorites The Byrd Family opening the show.

At just 15 years old, Morgan is already making a name for herself in the bluegrass and country music world. Fresh off her CMA debut, she has shared the stage with acclaimed artists including Carly Pearce, Ricky Skaggs and Molly Tuttle. Her performance at Porter Park offers audiences an opportunity to see a promising young artist early in her career.

The Byrd Family, a local bluegrass favorite, will kick off the evening with their signature sound.

Food trucks will open at 5 p.m., with Greek Street Dothan, P.S. Taco Company - Dothan, Sloozies and The Lemon Press serving a variety of food and refreshments.

School is back in session, which means summer is officially (unofficially) over! And WOW what a summer it was in the Wiregrass!

Before we trade swimsuits for school supplies, let’s look back at everything that happened across the City of Dothan this summer:

🎣 270+ participants at Youth Fishing Day
☀️ 830+ children served through Summer Camp
🎬 4 free movie nights
🏊 445+ swim lessons provided, from 18 months old to adults
🌊 75 FREE swim lessons on World’s Largest Swim Lesson Day
🥎 27 teams from across the state came to Dothan to compete in the ARPA State Softball Tournament
🏹 56 archers from across the state came to compete in the ARPA State Archery Tournament, including 40 Therapeutic Recreation athletes
🏅 3 Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners represented Team Alabama at the Special Olympics USA Games in Minnesota
🎓 18 interns spent their summer with the City, gaining valuable skills and real-world experience
🎶 3 free concerts rocked Porter Park
🎭 Our first-ever Shakespeare in the Park brought the arts outdoors
🧘 Our first Yoga in the Park brought wellness to the community
🎤 9 concerts and shows filled the Dothan Opera House and Dothan Civic Center
🐾 A brand-new dog park opened for our four-legged friends
🏓 The new Pickleball Complex opened and welcomed approximately 12,300 visits in its first month!
🇺🇸 10,000 people gathered Downtown to celebrate America’s 250th Birthday
🏙️ Dothan officially received its Main Street Designation
🚧 The Ross Clark Circle Project was completed
🛣️ The Main Street Repaving Project was completed

And just when we thought summer couldn’t get any better…

🏆 Dothan was named the #4 Best Place to Live in Alabama by U.S. News!

From parks and pickleball to concerts, community celebrations, major projects and new opportunities, this summer was a pretty great reminder of what makes Dothan a place to live, work, play and grow. ❤️

School may be back, but we’re not slowing down.

We had a blast hosting the contestants from The Circle Sessions that happened at the Dothan Opera House . They had some competition at Adventureland before competing onstage the next day. These are some of the best singer-songwriters in our region, and we were happy to host them for a little fun!

Before they take the stage at the Dothan Opera House tomorrow night (Saturday), the contestants from the Circle City Sessions battled it out at Adventureland. These singer songwriters are here in town to compete for big prizes, and you can be there when it happens! Grab a ticket and sit back and enjoy the show! The City of Dothan has been selected to participate in the Music Policy Resilience Network (MPRN), a global cohort of communities working together to strengthen local music ecosystems through research, collaboration, policy development and knowledge sharing.

Dothan joins communities from Ecuador, Pakistan, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, Kiribati and across the United States as part of this international initiative led by the Centre for Music Ecosystems and supported by the Nordic Culture Fund and the Levitt Foundation.

For Dothan, this is about more than music. It’s about exploring how a strong local music scene can support economic development, tourism, local businesses, artists, community connection and quality of life.

The announcement comes as Dothan prepares to launch its Levitt AMP Music Series at Porter Park this September, bringing free, diverse live music to the community.

This is an opportunity to take a closer look at what makes Dothan unique and build a music ecosystem that is authentic, sustainable and uniquely ours. 🎵

The future of music in Dothan is looking bright, and we’re just getting started.
