A Visual Diary and Reflection: It was a tremendous honor to witness the airing of the quilts in Gees Bend, AL. From the incredible textile work to the immense family history, Gees Bend is a personal favorite spot for our team. Every visit, we dive deeper into the artistic history of the various Quilting Bees and family legacy!
This particular visit brought our team to the workspace of Mary Ann Pettway, a master legacy quilter whose grandson has also taken up the family gift flawlessly. Each family we've noticed has a particular signature quilt design specific to their lineage. Mary Ann and her grandson use an angular shape to outfit their work, extremely difficult to recreate. Pictured, you'll find our Executive Director getting an honorary first-hand experience at the unknowing mathematical genius that is Ms. Pettway's quilting.
Driving further into the area, we pulled off on the corner riddled with beautiful quilts and family legacy. Joining the eager art lovers and curators already present, we walked through, observing the months and years of spectacular textile work. Synonymous with the waving of the trees in the breeze, each quilt rocking on the lines told a different story and reflected a different soul. The warmth of the families present made the moment all the more beautiful and serene.
Art has a way of grounding us to the moment, forcing us to be present and yield to the history that surrounds us. Gees Bend left our team in pure bliss and reflection on what it truly means to build and sustain a creative legacy. ❤️
