Great Egret with Chick - Alvin, Texas, USA - Apr. '26

I led two field trips to Resoft park for our local bird and bird photography festival in April of '26. The overall bird count was way down from previous years but there were still plenty of birds to photograph. This proud female was standing tall with its quickly growing chicks. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS , f/7.1, 1/3200, ISO 1600.

Great Egret - Alvin, Texas, USA - Apr. '26

It's amazing how much wildlife one can capture within seeing distance to development. Resoft Park in Alvin holds some unique and varied wildlife opportunities. I suggested this park to our local international bird and bird photography festival and have led field trips there for years. The numbers and ratios of birds varies year to year but there is always wildlife present. In low, overcast morning light one gets the benefit of very soft light that I like quite a lot. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS @ 151mm, f/7.1, ISO 10000, 1/2000.

Roseate Spoonbill in Flight - Alvin, Texas, USA - Apr. '26

This beautiful spoonbill was captured at a county park named Resoft Park in Alvin. I was leading a field trip there for our local birding and and bird photograph festival. It was the height of breeding season and this likely male was steadily bringing nesting material to its mate. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS, @ 500mm, f/7.1, 1/2000, ISO 16000.

Wood Duck Hen - Alvin, Texas, USA - Apr. '26

I captured this photo at Resoft Park in Alvin, Texas. The mother Wood Duck was keeping her ducklings close and mostly away from open water to prevent predation. At least two littles had been snatched by other birds in the days preceding this field trip. I was leading the trip as part of our local bird and bird photography festival. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS @ 500mm, f/7.1, 1/3200, ISO 20,000.

Laughing Gull - Galveston Island, Texas, USA - Apr. '26

I don't usually pay too much attention to gulls. On this scouting trip for birds in flight from a boat that I was leading for our local bird and bird photography festival I took a frame or two. This gull was just hovering in the stiff breeze and I could not help myself. They are , after all, beautiful and amazing flyers. It had its bright bill as we were in the heart of the breeding season. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS, , f/9.0, 1/3200, ISO 2000.

American Avocets - Galveston Island, Texas, USA - Apr. '26
This was a long shot from a moving boat at 500mm and I must say it worked. My photo tip for the day is, long lenses, even on a monopod, simply require plenty of shutter speed. I was scouting for a bird photography field trip I was leading along the shore of North Deer Island. This group of Avocets was, according to my software, about 650 meters away. This wide shot was further cropped in post editing so you could see these beauties. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS, @ 500mm, f/9.0, 1/3200, ISO 3200.

Brown Pelican with Chicks - Galveston Island, Texas, USA - Apr. '26

It is sometimes hard to believe that these tiny chicks grow up fast into a vision of their parents. These are very young chicks but they are well cared for by this vigilant Pelican. I assume this is the female but but can't say that for certain. They were photographed from a boat upon which I was scouting for my leadership role for a field trip by boat during our local bird photography and birding festival. This imaged was captured in and along the Inter-Coastal Waterway (ICW) just north of the Island. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS , f/9.0, 1/4000, ISO 3200

Brown Pelicans - Galveston, Texas, USA - Apr. '26
It is hard to tell sometimes if these birds are mating or fighting or fighting to mate. These two struck a very confusing pose. So much so that it's hard to tell where one ends and the other one begins, in in this very active and colorful photograph. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS, , f/9.0, 1/3200, ISO 2000.

American Oyster Catcher (banded) - Galveston Island, Texas, USA -Apr. '26

This beautiful bird was photographed while I was scouting locations for my photographic leadership role in our local birding festival. It was strolling near the shoreline and I anticipated this takeoff. I don't have specific information from the bands yet. However, I know the top bands are an individual identifiers and the silver band has tagging and tracking info. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS, , 1/3200, F/9.0, ISO 1250.

PS: I have more info: This bird was banded by Gulf Coast Bird Observatory in 2014.

Brown Pelican - Galveston Island, Texas, USA - Apr. '26
This image was captured while I was in a volunteer leadership role for our local birding festival. We were scouting by boat in and along the Inter Coastal Waterway (ICW) on the north side of the Island. This Brown Pelican had just landed but continued to display its incredible wing span for us. There were a large number of nesting Brown Pelicans this spring. All of them were displaying, nesting, or already rearing young chicks. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS @343 mm, 1/3200, f/9.0, ISO 4000.
