Purple Gallinule (juvenile) - Jocelyn Nungaray NWR - Anahuac, Texas, USA - Aug 2026

My friend Cecil and I were at the refuge just after sunrise and I was first confused by this bird. I wondered if it was a Sora Rail but alas, it concluded it was a juvenile, likely this year's hatch, Purple Gallinule. I learn something new each trip in the field. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS @ 800mm, 1/3200, f/9.0, ISO 2000.

American Alligator (young) Jocelyn Nungaray NWR - Anahuac, Texas, USA.

One thing about this time of year is that the gators are usually out in force. I love when the soft colors and smoothness of the morning light on the water contrast with the eye and texture of the gator. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS, 1/1600, f/9.0, ISO 1600.

Kildeer (juvenile) - Jocelyn Nungaray NWR - Anahuac, Tx, USA - Aug 2026
We were out a bit later in the morning at the refuge. This is the time of year when we see a lot of juvenile birds from this spring's hatch. The mottled back and thin neck ring are some tells for this little youngster. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS, 1/1600, f/9.0, ISO 1600.

Eastern Kingbird - Jocelyn Nungaray NWR, Anahuac, TX - Aug 16 2026
This is my first taken and processed image since the loss of my dear wife Dana Paulissen. The Eastern Kingbird was extremely cooperative and let me get a series of images. I like this one with the fanned tail. I hope you enjoy. For those who wonder if the EF 200-800 is a sharp and versatile wildlife lens, the proof is in the pudding for me. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 200-800 IS, 1/2500, f/7.3, ISO 2000. See less

Brown Pelican - Galveston Island, Texas, USA
I was leading a field trip called "Birds in Flight from a Boat" for our local birding and bird photography festival. The weather was overcast during this scouting trip the day before classes. I love how brilliantly Pelicans use ground effect to just glide so close to the surface of the water. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS, f/7.0, 1/2500, ISO 4000.

Great Egret - Alvin, Texas, USA - Apr. '26

Today we see a male Great Egret collecting nesting material to bring to his nest building mate. This one spied a bit of a branch in the water and snatched it up mid flight. I loved the behavior and action of the bird in flight. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS @ 400 mm, f/6.3, 1/3200, ISO 1600.

Tricolored Herons courting - Galveston Island, Texas, USA - Apr. '26

If you've been following my recent work you know I led a birds in flight from a boat field trip for our local bird and bird photography festival. We were in the Inter-Coastal Waterway (ICW) just north of the Island and found more Tricolored Herons in one place than I've ever seen. They were in full breeding plumage and were in the mood. These two were a mated pair. It's hard to know they don't share our own emotions when you see this gentle embrace. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS @ 451mm, f/8.0, 1/3200, ISO 6400.

Courting Tricolored Herons - Galveston Island, Texas, USA Apr. '26

I was a leading a birds in flight from a boat field trip for my local bird and bird photography festival when we found a honey hole that had more Tricolored Herons in one place than I think I've ever seen. They were all in brilliant breeding plumage and courting big time. They were hopping and flying and males were presenting nesting material. This could go on for quite a while. Mating took no time at all. Hmmm... Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS @ 500mm, 1/3200, f/8.0, ISO 6400.

Brown Pelican (with eggs) - Galveston Island, Texas, USA - Apr. '26

Life has been stressful and busy for me and creating final work from my several shoots in April 26 continues to help my sanity. This Pelican mom seems very proud and protective of her eggs. We are so fortunate here in Galveston County to have such an abundance of nesting "Browns" I led a boat-based field trip for our local bird and bird photography festival. By boat and with a long lens, one can capture such awonderful and different perspectives on the wildlife. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS @ 167 mm, f/9.0, 1/2500, ISO 1250.

Reddish Egret (White Morph) - Galveston Island, Texas, USA - Apr. '26

I don't often find a White Morph Reddish Egret to photograph, This one was on the nest. Being all white they can confuse the eye. The rough feathers on the head and neck are the same as the normally marked bird, only white of course. Even the morph has some tells for ID. Only those in breeding plumage have the pinkish coloration on their bills as you see here. Other parts of the year the morph has a mostly black bill. I captured this photograph while leading a birds in flight from a boat field trip for our local bird and bird photography festival. It was captured along the Inter Coastal Water Way (ICW) on the bay side of Galveston Island. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 100-500 L IS , 1/2500, f/8.0, ISO 4000.
