The Strongest Girl in the Rink” – A Shrine Club Story
Twelve-year-old Emily had always been full of energy — racing down the ice with her hockey stick in hand and a fearless grin on her face. But one season, something changed. Her back started to curve, and the pain grew worse with every stride. Doctors diagnosed her with severe scoliosis, and surgery became the only way forward.
Her family was overwhelmed — not just with fear, but with the cost and complexity of the treatment ahead. That’s when they were introduced to the Shriners.
From the moment they walked through the doors of the local Shrine Club, they were greeted with warmth, hope, and open arms. The Shriners took care of everything — coordinating care with a Shriners Hospital, arranging travel, and most importantly, making sure Emily never felt like she was facing this challenge alone.
The surgery was a success. Emily stood tall — literally and proudly — for the first time in months. And to celebrate, the Shrine Club hosted a BBQ for her and her family.
That afternoon, under a summer sky, Emily walked up to the microphone. Her back straight. Her voice shaking. “Thank you for giving me my life back,” she said.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Shriners, family, friends — all wiping away tears of joy and pride. It was more than just a meal that day. It was a celebration of what love, generosity, and community can do.
Years passed.
And then, on a chilly winter night, the television lit up with breaking sports news. Emily — now 19 — had just been drafted into the professional women’s hockey league.
She skated across the screen with speed and grace, lifting her stick in the air after a winning goal. And back at the Shrine Club, a group of old friends stood watching, eyes full of tears once again — this time not for healing, but for the legacy they had helped create.
Because Emily didn’t just beat scoliosis.
She became a champion.
