"GILDA SNOWDEN Florals: Urbana & Baroque" will be up at Galerie Camille until September 4th! It is always a great feeling to see Gilda's work on display, and curator Dalia Reyes selected some amazing pieces.
The show spans a broad range in Gilda's career, with work from the 1990s, up until 2014. Please stop by and have a look around!

A short candid video of Gilda working in her studio! This video was taken in the summer of 2014 and shows her starting a new piece on what seems to be a repurposed canvas. This painting was never completed, and is currently with the Estate. How lucky that we were able to capture one of the last pieces Gilda ever created on video!
Usually, Gilda would play classical music while she painted. Many of her Tornadoes were created while she listened to Mozart or Dvorak. In this instance there is no music, but old black and white films playing in the background helped her focus as well.

When initially cataloguing Gilda's work in her studio, the family was tasked with taking a photo of each individual piece and giving it a lot number. Not an easy job! We took those photos and created these volumes to have quick access to a certain piece and be able to find it based on that lot number. These books have been invaluable to the LLC as a reference tool when looking for certain works, and is used as a catalog for collectors to utilize during the viewing and buying process.

For artists out there, it is highly recommended that you give each of your pieces a lot number and record them. Start the process of organizing your work, it will not only benefit you, but also anyone else that will be handling you art in the future. 👍🏽

We have works on paper for days. It took us a long time to give all of them a lot number, but we have finally got all of the ones Gilda kept in her flat files organized.

Gilda's influence reached so many people. The Snowden family has several copies of this article written in that features her explanations about her iconic "Self in Storm" series, as well as how she uses her work to give back to her city and mentor her students. Gilda influenced thousands of people during her time as a professor at and and she mentored hundreds of students that have used her wisdom to progress in their own careers. Gilda was and still is a pillar in the Detroit art community.

We are making plans to have a works on paper showing and sale next weekend, Sept 14-15th. Gilda created hundreds of pastel, acrylic, and graphite works on paper, and the Estate has been able to shift through them all and get them cataloged.

Gilda created so many works of art that they had to be divided into three different locations! We take measures to ensure every piece is accounted for, and they are safe. Professional art storage is an amazing resource, but many businesses charge based on the volume of the collection. Over time, having the art stored at a commercial location became too pricey. Moving the work back home allows the family to have constant contact with the art, and we are readily able to remove pieces for a show or any other event.
