Thousands of younger Michigan residents will soon be eligible to attend community college tuition-free under an expansion of the state’s Michigan Reconnect program.

Beginning this fall, Michigan residents ages 21 to 24 can qualify for Michigan Reconnect. The program was previously open to residents 25 and older.

The expansion was included in Michigan’s latest state budget. The state says an updated application for residents ages 21–24 will be available in time to enroll for the fall semester. (Michigan)

Who qualifies?

To receive Michigan Reconnect, students generally must:

• Be at least 21 years old
• Have lived in Michigan for at least one year
• Have a high school diploma, GED or equivalent
• Not already have an associate or bachelor’s degree
• Complete the FAFSA
• Enroll in an eligible associate degree or skills certificate program

What does it pay for?

For students attending their in-district community college, Michigan Reconnect covers tuition and mandatory fees after other financial aid is applied.

Students attending a college outside their district may still receive assistance but could be responsible for the difference between in-district and out-of-district tuition. (Michigan)

Metro Detroit-area participating colleges

Michigan Reconnect is accepted at all of Michigan’s public community colleges, including:

• Henry Ford College
• Macomb Community College
• Oakland Community College
• Schoolcraft College
• Washtenaw Community College
• Wayne County Community College District
• Monroe County Community College

The state says all 28 public community colleges and two Tribal colleges in Michigan participate in Michigan Reconnect. (Michigan)

Students must apply for Michigan Reconnect, apply to a participating college and complete the FAFSA before enrolling in an eligible program.

There is a bar on Detroit's canals where you can pull up in a boat, a kayak, or a jet ski and dock right at the bar.

Canal Bar sits on the Fox Creek canal at Coriander Kitchen and Farm in Jefferson Chalmers, a woman-owned spot built inside a former marina. First come, first served under the blue and white striped umbrellas. Cocktails, wine, beer, and snacks made with ingredients from Coriander's own farm.

Boats need to be 26 feet or under with a shallow draw. Kayaks and jet skis, no problem.

Open from 1 p.m. weekends and 3 p.m. weekdays, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
