Yesterday, Detroit Opera was honored to join the City of Detroit’s Juneteenth celebration, reflecting on freedom, resilience, and the ongoing work of building a more just future.

A special highlight was former Detroit Opera Resident Artist Brianna Robinson’s moving performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” accompanied by John Etsell on piano.

Thank you to the City of Detroit for bringing our community together in recognition of this important day. We were grateful to be part of a celebration rooted in history, joy, remembrance, and collective possibility.

Across his tenure at Detroit Opera, Yuval has challenged us to imagine what opera can be: more open, more urgent, more daring, and more deeply connected to the world around us. His vision helped bring unforgettable productions to our stages and invited audiences to experience this art form in new ways.

Cameroonian bass-baritone Aurélien Mangwa is quickly gaining attention for the richness, power, and presence of his voice. He made his international debut in Belgium with Brussels Operette Theater and has appeared with Opera Parallèle, the Opera Festival of Chicago, and in repertoire including Don Giovanni, Carmen, Die Zauberflöte, Manon Lescaut, and Puccini’s Messa di Gloria. His recent honors include recognition from the Seattle Opera Guild, an Encouragement Award from the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, and finalist placement in the Africa Lyric’s Opera Competition.

Auditions will take place September 16, 2026, with the position beginning in January 2027.

Applications are due June 30, 2026. This audition is by invitation only, and applicants will receive notice of invitation by early July.

Lansing-born tenor Travis Leon Williams returns for his second season with the Detroit Opera Resident Artist Program. In the 2025–26 season, he made his Detroit Opera mainstage debut as Luke in The Handmaid’s Tale, performed in Apartment House 1776 at Cranbrook Art Museum, and covered roles in Down in the Valley and Highway 1, USA. His credits also include Opera Las Vegas, Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Opera Grand Rapids, and Vegas City Opera. A graduate of Western Michigan University and UNLV, Williams is also a teaching artist, adjudicator, and member of the Verna D. Holley Project.

Mezzo-soprano Grace Ryan is an award-winning artist from Chicago and a recent University of Michigan graduate. Her roles include Hänsel, Dorabella, Cherubino, Carmen, Juno/Ino, Nancy, and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in Scalia/Ginsburg. This summer, she covers the title role in Louise Bertin’s Fausto at Opera Neo and performs Cherubino with Finger Lakes Opera. Her recent honors include First Prize in the Luciano Pavarotti Foundation Opera Naples International Voice Competition, the Opera Grand Rapids VanderLaan Prize, and awards from the Met Laffont, Opera Index, and George & Nora London competitions.

American-Canadian dramatic soprano Madison Montambault has been praised for her “powerhouse” voice and “enthusiastic and attractive singing.” A Michigan native and University of Michigan alumna, she recently made her Opera Birmingham debut as Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana and has appeared with companies across North America and Europe, including Indianapolis Opera, Sarasota Opera, Edmonton Opera, Opéra de Montréal, and Teatru Manoel. Her honors include a 2026 Olga Forrai Foundation grant, finalist recognition in the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition, and multiple awards from the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition.

June 11, 1988 — Luciano Pavarotti appears in concert at Joe Louis Arena in an concert presented by Michigan Opera Theatre (now Detroit Opera). Pavarotti’s relationship with Dr. David DiChiera and MOT helped build national attention around the company and, later, the Opera House project.

After an international search, Detroit Opera has announced the four singers selected to train in Detroit Opera’s Resident Artist Program during the 2026–27 season. We are pleased to welcome soprano Madison Montambault, mezzo-soprano Grace Ryan, tenor Travis Leon Williams (in his second year as a Resident Artist!), and bass-baritone Aurélien Mangwa.

The four were chosen from more than 600 artists who applied to the program, which is spearheaded by renowned opera coach and pianist Nathalie Doucet, Detroit Opera’s Head of Music. This is the fifth season of the Resident Artist program, which builds on the strong foundations of the Studio Artist program founded in 2015 by Dr. David DiChiera, Detroit Opera’s founder, while embodying the company’s forward-looking approach spearheaded by President and CEO Patty Isacson Sabee and Music Director Roberto Kalb. The program embraces individualized study and direct performing experience to provide world-class opportunities to the next generation of opera talent.

You can see and hear our Resident Artists on the Detroit Opera House stage, and in the community throughout the 2026-2027 season!
