Pewabic, founded in Detroit in 1903, is a community of makers, educators and innovators devoted to progressing ceramics. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to making ceramics relevant and accessible to all by supporting artistic innovation and creating meaningful learning experiences. We achieve this through a rotation of contemporary ceramic exhibitions, adult and youth educational progra

ms, and the production of ceramic tile and giftware. We encourage the public to tour our National Historic Landmark pottery for free during regular business hours.

Our new Pewabic Uncovered Tour offers participants an in-depth look at an important chapter of Black History in Detroit.

St. Matthew’s, founded in 1846, served as an active safe haven for freedom seekers and supported Detroit’s free Black community despite mounting threats from the Fugitive Slave Act. In 1971, St. Matthew’s merged with St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church, combining two congregations with deep and storied roots in the city.

The English, Gothic-inspired St. Matthew’s & St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church is home to remarkable and largely unknown Pewabic Tile installations. Your ticket directly contributes to the continued maintenance of this extraordinary sacred space while also supporting Pewabic’s mission to share Detroit’s historic tile installations with the public. Follow the link in our below to register today!

We’re excited to announce the Pewabic Neighborhood Studio, a new community ceramics space that will expand opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and accessibility to art programming on Detroit’s East Side.

Located at the Cadillac Arts Centre Cadillac Arts Centre, the Pewabic Neighborhood Studio will serve as a community hub for arts programming anchored by a partnership with Progressive Art Studio Collective PASC (PASC). This studio will be designed to foster new collaborations with organizations, artists, and our neighbors.

Construction is underway to make a fully accessible space that will create new opportunities to welcome participants of all abilities and support a larger range of community-centered programs and partnerships.

You can donate to this developing project, learn more about the vision for the new studio space, and follow along with our progress by visiting the webpage linked in our bio. Pewabic Education programs are possible because of the support of community members like you.

“For more than 120 years, Pewabic has connected people through clay. The Pewabic Neighborhood Studio represents an exciting new chapter in that legacy - creating a welcoming, fully accessible space where more people can experience ceramics, build community, and engage with the creative process.”

“As we continue to grow our partnerships and expand access to the arts, this new studio reflects our ongoing commitment to making ceramics education and creative opportunities available to all.”

- Annie Dennis, Pewabic Education Director

“The Pewabic Neighborhood Studio gives us the opportunity to think even more expansively about access, creativity, and how we serve our community,” said Pewabic Executive Director Jim Leija.

“This new fully accessible studio creates more opportunities for people of all abilities to experience ceramics, while giving us room to grow new programs and new ways of engaging with our neighbors. We’re especially excited to do that alongside PASC and as part of the remarkable energy taking shape within the Little Village cultural corridor.”

A late-summer reflection on the history of handcrafting that brought us to this moment.

Like many vessels and tiles featured in our Heritage Collection, the historically-inspired Snowdrop Vase tells a story of Pewabic’s founding and the principles that will guide us into the future.

For 123 years, Pewabic Pottery has remained one of the few continuously operating potteries in the country. Thank you for following along and for supporting Detroit’s nonprofit pottery, ensuring that Pewabic will be preserved and enjoyed for years to come.

Today we’re throwing it back to one of our favorite custom tile designs to date.

This three-sided fireplace extends to a wood vaulted ceiling in this modern ranch home and features a small selection of glazes including Laurel, Smoke, Charcoal, and Aurora Iridescent.

The clients share deep roots in Cranbrook and wanted their fireplace to celebrate that connection by incorporating elements of the fireplace Eliel Saarinen designed using Pewabic Tile, now located in the Saarinen House.

Shout out to Steven Smith for taking on this massive installation project, and to our incredible designers and clients for working together to bring this vision to life.
