Pewabic, founded in Detroit in 1903, is a community of makers, educators and innovators devoted to progressing ceramics. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to making ceramics relevant and accessible to all by supporting artistic innovation and creating meaningful learning experiences. We achieve this through a rotation of contemporary ceramic exhibitions, adult and youth educational programs, and the production of ceramic tile and giftware. We encourage the public to tour our National Historic Landmark pottery for free during regular business hours.

Celebrating our connection to one of Detroit’s most iconic downtown skyscrapers.

The Guardian Building, known as the “Cathedral of Finance”, was built in the late-1920s and contains work from 40 artisans, including Pewabic Co-Founder, Mary Chase Perry Stratton.

The custom tile work on the exterior is well known, but we’ve uncovered Pewabic Tile contributions within the walls of this influential landmark.

If Detroit history piques your interest, we encourage you to join an upcoming historic tile tour which grants participants access to view Pewabic work and sections of the Guardian not ordinarily accessible to the public. The next historic tile tour of St. Matthew’s & St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church takes place on Wednesday, October 21 from 3 pm - 4 pm.

Learn more about the little known Pewabic Tile installations at this English, Gothic-inspired church that joined two influential congregations and served as a refuge for freedom seekers, supporting Detroit’s free Black community despite mounting threats from the Fugitive Salve Act.

Your ticket unlocks rare access to this extraordinary site while supporting Pewabic Pottery’s mission to share Detroit’s historic tile installations with the public and helping sustain this beautiful and significant sacred space.

Please note that this tour meets at 📍St. Matthew’s & St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church at 8850 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48202 and not Pewabic Pottery. You will enter through the doors pictured in this post!

We’re excited to announce new tour dates, one happening this month on Tuesday, October 20, of the iconic Cathedral Church of St. Paul. View historic Pewabic Tile features handcrafted by our founder and founding team of craftspeople, dating back to 1909.

During these tours led by a Pewabic expert you will be given special access to explore the extensive, historic, Pewabic tile work usually unavailable for public viewing.

Tours that meet at important sacred spaces such as the Cathedral Church of St. Paul and St. Matthew’s & St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church also contribute directly to their preservation. Each ticket purchased helps our Education Team expand programming throughout the city of Detroit and at the pottery.
