Barbed Featuring artists from minority groups. Founded in 2014. Intentionally Mindful, issue #12 Funded by The Andy Warhol Foundation and CultureSource. W.A.G.E.

Barbed Magazine is a contemporary art magazine based in the greater Detroit metro area. Its exclusive content features artists who work and live in the region as well as those living in cities at the US-Canada border. Barbed was founded in September 2014 with the purpose of promoting artists and their work, especially emerging and minority artists. The magazine was inspired by frequent discussions

about the shortage of exposure opportunities, gallery spaces, and muted conversations that inhibit artists at the beginning stages of their careers. Today, Barbed is a blended publication consisting of artists’ notes, performance art, food interactions, interviews, and socially engaged, inspired, experimental, and confessional art. Barbed Magazine is produced in limited edition quantities and printed twice annually, in the spring and winter. Barbed is a proud member of the W.A.G.E. Coalition, a growing group of artists, art workers and arts organizations that share Barbed's goal of building a sustainable business model in which artists are paid for their work. (Working Artists and the Greater Economy) is a New York-based activist organization focused on regulating the payment of artist fees by nonprofit art institutions and establishing a sustainable labor relation between artists and the institutions that contract our work.

Excited to be making these tote bags, each hand-stitched with blue ribbon, in celebration of Barbed’s tenth anniversary. A few weekends ago, I met with Redd .q ,a local Detroit artist, for an improvised photoshoot and a conversation about featuring his work in the upcoming issue of Barbed—Issue #13, titled “FREEDOM in the shape of US.”

Proceeds from these tote bag sales will help fund the production of Issue #13. Bags available now at the Barbed Shop.
