Plowshares Theatre wants to take a moment to wish you a happy Juneteenth!
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas—more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had declared freedom for enslaved African American men, women, and children in the Confederate states. Following the Confederate surrender at Appomattox near the end of the Civil War, the Union Army moved to enforce that freedom in Texas, the westernmost state of the rebellion. The day celebrates Black culture and resilience, and in 2021, it became a federal holiday.
Juneteenth isn't just a moment in time. It is an acknowledgment of our unique American story. It offers us examples of our ancestors' resilience—people who endured far greater obstacles to freedom than we do, and who met them leaning on faith, grace, and an unwavering resolve to be free. May you take time this weekend to celebrate all they achieved.
