Sheila E. is one of the coldest percussionists to ever touch a stage. Drums, timbales, full command of rhythm. She didn’t follow the band, she led it. Her genius even extended to using tuned water bottles for the intro percussion on Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" – a legendary, though uncredited, contribution. When she linked with Prince, it elevated everything. The Glamorous Life proved she could front a record and still dominate the drums. Live, she is a problem. Precision, energy, showmanship. Sade understood something a lot of creatives still struggle with today. You do not have to be constantly visible to remain powerful.

After major success, she stepped away from the spotlight on purpose. She protected her privacy, lived her life, raised her child, and gave herself space to experience the world outside of fame. That quiet became part of the creative process.

She was born Helen Folasade Adu in Ibadan, Nigeria. Her Yoruba name, Fọláṣadé, is commonly interpreted as “honor confers a crown.” Sade is the shortened form of that name, and somehow it fits her perfectly.

She never chased attention. She never flooded the world with access to her life. She returned when she had something meaningful to say.

That kind of discipline is rare.

Michael wrote the record himself, and his original home demo was already remarkably close to the record we know today. He even used his siblings Randy and Janet Jackson on the early demo, banging bottles to help create the percussion groove.

That bass from Louis Johnson. That John Robinson drum pocket. Those Seawind horns. The percussion. Michael stacking his own vocals.

THIS is why the record still moves a dance floor 47 years later. 🔥🕺🏾

This makes even more sense when you remember what Neverland was really about.

Michael Jackson didn’t build Neverland just so his own kids could have an amusement park in their backyard. He opened it to sick children and children who might never have the opportunity to experience places like Disneyland.

And according to Paris, Michael’s own children didn’t automatically get to run around and enjoy everything whenever they wanted. They had responsibilities during the week. They had to do what they were supposed to do first, then they earned their playtime.

I actually love that.

Imagine your father owning Neverland and still telling you, “Handle your responsibilities first.” 😂

The park may have been at their home, but Michael made sure his children understood that everything wasn’t automatically theirs just because they were his kids.

That says a lot about how he wanted to raise them.
