So it is snail mail time. I made postcards then went through a whole bunch of black galleries in the United States and thought I would introduce myself to them via a postcard. My list is at 31 for today. Next week I will send out some more. Also, I used some of my favorite stamps for this.

Good morning y’all,

I got my decision back today. I wasn’t selected. (This time)

Congrats to everyone who was selected this year. Well deserved!

Every time I apply to something, my work is being seen. They are sitting with it, reading my statements, possibly feeling where I’m coming from. For me that’s a major part of my artistic testimony.

This felt like an introduction. Me stepping into a room and saying, Hi my name is Takeisha and this is what I do. See ya again.

If I could offer encouragement to anyone today it would to apply for things you seek. This experience has been so sweet just a possibility of it all. Like literally I was in the numbers.

(the photograph you see is some of my recent works I’ve been studying surrealism)

Currently the artist in residence at my own house.

We keep waiting for the invite. The email. The grant. The institution to name us worthy. Meanwhile the work is sitting on the table, half finished.

Practice how you perform.

If you say you want a residency, start now. One week. One month. Six months. Even a weekend. Claim the space you already have. What body of work are you building? What questions are you chasing? What is the vision?

Decide what this season is about and structure your days around it. Create a real plan for the work you say you want to make. Write out your intentions like someone approved them. Show up each day as if the funding already came through and the only thing left to do is honor it.

Because the truth is this: the world will treat your work the way you treat it. If you handle it like an afterthought, it will remain one. If you stand inside it fully, even in your own living room, even with no one watching, you begin to alter the terms. You begin to name yourself.

And once you name yourself, the room changes.

Submissions close tomorrow, February 11 at 11:59 PM.

I’m honored to be the guest curator for Black Is Beautiful, the upcoming Dzanc House online exhibition. We’re in the final day, and I truly want to see what work you would bring into this space.

I’m inviting original work in any medium. Photography, collage, painting, textile, mixed media, digital work. Pieces that hold Black beauty in quiet ways, complicated ways, celebratory ways, everyday ways.

There is no submission fee. I’ve covered the lab donation to remove that barrier and keep access open.

If the work has been sitting with you, waiting, this is your sign.

Flyer attached for details. Link in my comments.

Thank you to everyone who commented, shared, or reached out about the LouMae Art Catalog. I’ve contacted those who expressed interest and archived the post so I can focus on the next steps. Grateful for all the support and the energy around this project.

I commented on your post last November. I’m not sure you saw it. Just a reminder. I’m still open to this.
