🛣️ I drove down County Highway 30A on my way to my studio, CHROMA, every day, passing one of the coastal dune lakes, Oyster Lake.

It’s a large lake with beautiful homes on the east side.

🌊 Its outfall meanders under a bridge, and most days it almost connects with the Gulf. I always get excited when it actually does, as the tea-colored water mixes beautifully with the turquoise Gulf.

I thought for sure that would be my inspiration for an Oyster Lake painting… but no. That moment happened while driving back home from the studio, after an afternoon storm.

Allison Wickey came to 30A in 2007 for the beauty of the beach but stayed for the soul of this unbelievable, haunting, hidden slice of heaven.

🎨 I painted this one using the same process I follow in all my oil paintings, but this one turned out especially interesting early on.

The subtle colors and washy paint quality felt just right and seemed to say, "Stop painting." Luckily, I listened to that inner voice and hung her on the wall. I decided to wait until the next day to see if it needed more work.

😍 Later that day, a visitor to the studio exclaimed, "Oooo, I love that one." "I guess she's done," I thought.

Soon after, she was purchased to live with a longtime collector and student in Michigan.
