🎨 I’ve painted several scenes from Topsail Hill Preserve in the past.

This one in particular had been marinating in my head for a while...

☀️ It was a bright, sunny day. I loved the shapes of the sky coming through the slash pines and hoped to capture the sunny atmosphere of the sky, water, dunes, and scrubby landscape in soft, muted colors and brushstrokes.

I love all those elements together. It’s such a unique and beautiful coastal environment here in NW Florida.

🏞️ Western Lake is the most famous coastal dune lake in Walton County.

Locals know it, tourists know it, and painters paint it. One of the most iconic views of Western Lake can be seen from 30A, looking across the lake toward the famous tree stand.

🌾 The lake is just off to the right of this scene. You can't see it from this viewpoint, but it's still very much a part of the landscape.

I wanted to see it differently. So, in January 2020, I visited Grayton Beach State Park and walked the mile-long nature trail through the sand dunes, pine flatwoods, and scrub oak.

🤩 That's where I found this path. THE path.

The way the shadows of the plants formed in the sand and on the walking path ended up being my main inspiration for this painting.

😍 This view of Little Redfish Lake was so fun to find!

It was around 4 p.m. in the afternoon and the sun was getting low in the sky.

🌊 This scene was taken at the point where the coastal dune lake meets the gulf—great setting light, great shadows.

The original painting now resides with a dear student and collector in Maryland.
