It is with profound sadness that we share in grieving the loss of Jon Douglas Rake, lifelong supporter of community theatre, founding member of TACOMA MUSICAL PLAYHOUSE, and longtime board member and supporter of community theatre across the nation, not only with Washington State Community Theatre Association, but AACT - American Association of Community Theatre, Oregon Community Theatre Alliance, IACT, and countless other theatre companies and organizations.

Our hearts surround Jon's family and the Tacoma community he impacted so much.

With heavy hearts, we share the passing of longtime AACT board member and beloved theatre advocate, Jon Douglas Rake.

Jon served as an AACT regional representative and was a passionate, steadfast supporter of community theatre at every level. His dedication to AACT, to WCTA, and to the broader theatre community was matched by his sharp wit, infectious laugh, and unwavering commitment to the art form he loved so deeply.

Jon was a cherished member of the Tacoma theatre community and a co-founder of Tacoma Musical Playhouse, where his legacy of leadership, creativity, and historic preservation will continue to be felt for years to come.

Our hearts are with his husband and life partner, Jeffrey, as well as Jon’s family, friends, and the countless artists and colleagues whose lives he touched. Jon’s impact on community theatre, both locally and nationally, was profound, and his absence leaves a space that cannot be filled.

We are grateful for the time we shared with him, for his mentorship and friendship, and for the passion he brought to everything he did. Jon will be deeply missed, and his legacy will live on through the stories, laughter, and creativity he helped foster. 💙

Felicitations TACOMA MUSICAL PLAYHOUSE for ADVANCING TO REGIONALS for their performance of "I love You, You're Perfect, now Change, Act II", Book and Lyrics by Joe DiPietro, Music by Jimmy Roberts. Fantastic job at Kaleidoscope 2025, hooray! AWARDS WON: Outstanding Production – I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, Tacoma Musical Playhouse; Outstanding Set Design – Jon Douglas Rake & Dennis Kurtz; Outstanding Musical Direction – Jeffrey Stvrtecky; Outstanding Direction – Jon Douglas Rake; Outstanding Actor – Woman 1 (Ceili Carusco); Outstanding Actor – Man 2 (Christian Bolduc); All Star Cast - Steve Barnett & Elise Campello.

Show Elegy: Behind the pianist Strvtecky (honest Facebook, that's his name) and his violinist compadre, there is a wall of hearts with a reader board telling us I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE Act 2, and after spending a Valentine's Day away from my Valentine (theatre festival, snow, great tacos at Indicana, you know why), I kinda needed to hear that. Vows of desperation, living a vicarious hot rod existence through wheely chairs, silent morning angst, friendly pick-ups while mourning, the curse of bridal dresses, marital s*x at all costs, being left holding the bag(s), waiting to p*e, bonding with a guy who doesn't share cheese puffs. (Seriously, a whole theatre full of "I skipped dinner for this art" - pass that bucket around, dude!) All this [jon douglas] raked up in a neat assortment of music, comedy, and oh, did I mention a wall of hearts? I think I'm up there on that. Thanks, Tacoma Musical Playhouse, I gotta get someone I love a card, a hug, and an argument caused by our shared togetherness. -walbeck

Congratulations Theatre33, for ADVANCING TO REGIONALS with your performance of "Constellations" by Nick Payne! What a showing at Kaleidoscope 2025, woohoo! AWARDS WON: Outstanding Production – Constellations, Theatre33; Outstanding Lighting Design – Marianna Chebotaryova; Outstanding Sound Design – Marianna Chebotaryova; All Star Cast - Christophe Peyras & Era Pogosova; The WSCTA's Keith Gehrig Spectacular Design Element Award - The Set of Constellations.

Show Elegy: Dare to love on a circle of precarious balance, surrounded by the lights of every decision you could make and try to do it in a fixed amount of time you cannot predict the length of. A sea of dark illuminated by CONSTELLATIONS of decisions, tactics, mood swings, the slow tethering of two people into an inextricably necessary pairing . . . sorry, got lost describing the theater. Or the couple. Or the lives of the people around me watching Theatre33's play, or the people walking the snowy streets of Spokane, or the beautiful theater artists sharing their work so Kaleidoscopically this week. Oh, hey, that's what it is, beautiful lights reflected back at ourselves in new shapes and vantages. Maybe I'm wrong. I'll kick a blue light on my way out and try again, right? Always try again. -walbeck

Awesome debut Resonance Studio at Kaleidoscope 2025! They performed "The Case of the Crushed Petunias by Tennessee Williams, Composed by Josh Lanza. AWARDS WON: Outstanding Costume Design – Nelya Galiakbarova, Veronika Tchesnokova, Evgenia Baranova, Natalya Grebenik; Outstanding Choreography – Anna Karpukhina; Outstanding Properties – Nelya Galiakbarova, Veronika Tchesnokova, Natalya Grebenik; Backstage Congeniality Award - Cast and Crew; All Star Cast - Andrey Grebenik and Mike Lion; and the WSCTA's The Ralph Eaton New Horizons Award.

Show Elegy: Who knew the way to realize you've built your simple notions shop into a cage repressing your inner desire to explore the world was a big-footed guy stomping on your plants? You don't have to be a donut-loving cop to solve THE CASE OF THE CRUSHED PETUNIAS, you just gotta move to your created-specifically-for-this-show music, un-encircle some growths, and throw Mrs. Dull's groceries down the street with a satisfying crash! Live lively, all exits will works, and watch that dancin' cast shuffle (cop's got hip action!) and that director with a bird on her finger Nelya Galiakbarova must be the source of that lively. Who had a Tennessee Williams' play ending with a dance party? Bop 'em if you got 'em. -walbeck
