Celebrating Sue Jensen's 90th birthday at the Des Moines Art Center. Left to right: Cynthia Hunafa, JoAnn Hughes, Sue Jensen, and Veola Perry, photographed by Eric Salmon. There was music and food, and everyone had an enjoyable evening with Sue. Sue has been a trailblazer advocating for Arts Education. Been a teacher with the Des Moines Art Center, Tiny Tots Day Care Center, and Des Moines Public Schools. Been involved with projects for the Des Moines Junior League, legislative work for affordable child care, a Des Moines civil rights activist, and also for the halfway house for the Women from Mitchellville prison. Lee Furgerson has worked with Sue with Very Special Arts, and Gateway Dance Theatre has done workshops with Sue. Unfortunately, I could not make the event; however Lee Furgerson and Eric Salmon represented us.

April is Celebrate Diversity Month โ€” a time to honor the many cultures, identities, and lived experiences that shape our communities and the world.

Dr. Maya Angelouโ€™s life was a reflection of this truth. From her years living and working in Ghana and Egypt to her deep commitment to civil rights, she believed that understanding one another across differences was essential to building a more compassionate and just society.

For Dr. Angelou, diversity was not something to simply acknowledge; it was something to embrace, learn from, and uplift.

โ€œWe are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.โ€ โ€” Dr. Maya Angelou

This month invites us to listen more closely, learn more deeply, and honor the voices and stories that broaden our understanding of one another.

โœจHow are you celebrating diversity in your community?

Chrysalis Scholar Spotlight: Annie Huynh

When Annie joined the Chrysalis After-School Program, she was still finding her footing and learning how to feel comfortable. Through the program, something shifted.

โ€œI participated in Chrysalis After-School Program at a time when I didn't really feel comfortable in my own skin. This program made me break out of my shell and step into my own identity as a woman.โ€

Today, Annie reflects with pride and gratitude, not just for the experience, but for the confidence, growth, and sense of self it helped her build.

โ€œI really appreciate this program and what it has done for me, and I have no regrets about participating in this awesome program.โ€

Stories like Annieโ€™s are why Chrysalis After-School matters. When girls are supported, seen, and encouraged, they donโ€™t just grow, they step fully into who they are becoming.
