SHS Theatre Department students have had an unforgettable experience at the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase! We are so proud of the hard work, talent, and passion our students brought to this incredible opportunity. A HUGE congratulations to Levi Lane on being named a Broadway Intensive Scholarship Recipient for his role as Willard Hewitt in Footloose! To say we are proud is an understatement! 🎭✨

We had an amazing experience at IHSMTA Behind the Scenes Day this past Wednesday! ✨🤩
From learning more about the creativity and teamwork that bring productions to life to spending the day surrounded by people who share the same love for theatre, it was a fantastic day!

15 awards and so much to celebrate from FOOTLOOSE! 💙🎶🩷

For the second year in a row, we received 15 recognitions from the Iowa High School Musical Theatre Awards, including our first-ever Outstanding Overall Performance award. We were also honored with Outstanding Achievement for Ensemble and Special Recognition for Community Engagement. Our behind-the-scenes work was also recognized across multiple technical theatre areas, showing just how much went into bringing this production to life. We will continue the celebration at the 2026 Iowa High School Musical Theatre Awards Showcase at the Des Moines Civic Center with over 110 schools from across Iowa.

Representing Spencer in the Triple Threat Program are Robbie Gerlock and Levi Lane, who were selected for the second straight year. Robbie will also perform “Heaven Help Me” in the Spotlight Medley. Ellie Spieker, Gavin Hurst, Mikalah Prickett, and Molly Lowder will perform in a statewide collaborative medley.

Introducing… Mia Schwartz!!

“I have been able to participate in speech and drama at SHS for three years and I couldn’t be more thankful for my time here. I have been able to be present in 2 musicals, Guys and Dolls as well as Footloose, and 3 plays, Radium Girls, Alice in Wonderland, and now, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I have also gotten the privilege to work behind the scenes on the Community Outreach and Dramaturgy crews, serving in leadership roles in both crews. The SHS Theater Department was one place I never thought I would call home, but I am so glad that I can say that I do. This amazing program has helped me find some of my best friends, learn more about myself than I ever thought I would in high school, and created so many memories that will last a lifetime.”

“I have been a part of SHS speech and drama for all 4 years of highschool. I have been on stage for 5 productions and back stage for 1. I’ve participated in large group speech each year starting my sophomore year, qualifying for All-State each year. The most recent roll I’ve played is Oberon in SHS’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I love acting and am going to continue in college where I will major in Theatre and minor in Dance.“

“Hi, my name is Robbie Gerlock. I have been involved with SHS Large Group and IE speech and drama since my freshman year, having brought 9 events to Super-State! I have also done jazz choir and band, marching band, choir, and some other activities outside of fine arts. I have had a role in 8 shows, with my most current being Midsummer Night’s Dream playing Nick Bottom, and working in set design. Some of my proudest accomplishments are going to IHSMTA for the past two years for performance and behind the scenes awards. As the president of the thespian troupe, I couldn’t be more proud of what everyone has accomplished and what they have ahead of them! For me, next year I will attend the University of Iowa to study biology in hopes of becoming a Physician Assistant.”

“I have been involved in theater for all four years of high school. I have been the head of run crew since my sophomore year. I have helped backstage with all four of the musicals as well as two of the plays; Radium Girls and Midsummer Nights Dream. Fine arts is a place where I can be myself and enjoy the friendships I have made. I’ve met some of my best friends, and I have developed strong relationships with some people I wouldn’t have even expected. I’m so grateful to have been in the program and to have met so many amazing people.“
