What a season.

From the opening notes of United in Song to last night's closing concert, Wide Open Spaces, the 2025–2026 season of the Des Moines Vocal Arts Ensemble has been everything we hoped it would be — and more.
This year, we were joined by City Voices, the Dallas Center-Grimes Singers, and audiences who showed up, listened deeply, and reminded us why live choral music matters. Under the direction of Dr. Tim McMillin, our singers gave everything they had — and it showed.

To everyone who came to a concert, shared a post, recommended us to a friend, or simply believed in what we do: thank you. You are the reason this ensemble exists.

If this season moved you, consider making a gift to DMVAE. Your support helps us continue bringing high-quality choral music to Central Iowa — and makes the next season possible.

This Sunday, thirty singers from across Central Iowa will walk onto Faith Lutheran Church and close a season that has been, in every sense, about connection.

This year we sang with the young performers of City Voices. We shared a stage with the DCG Singers from Dallas Center-Grimes High School — 32 student singers who reminded us why this music matters to the next generation. We welcomed guest conductor Dr. Meredith Bowen. And through all of it, we made music that tried to say something true.

Wide Open Spaces is the final chapter. And like every great final chapter, it points forward: "‘Tis not too late to seek a newer world."

We would love to see you there.

"There's part of my story, there's part of my song, there's part of my journey, that's yet to be found."

Those words, from Sarah Quartel's Wide Open Spaces, are the heart of our season finale this Sunday. What begins as an outward journey — "Into the world now, look at me go!" — becomes something more personal: "The spaces inside of me, yet to be filled."

The wide-open spaces are not only around us. They are within us, shaped by what we seek, what we love, and who we are becoming. That's the idea at the center of this program — and it's what thirty voices will be singing into the room this Sunday at Faith Lutheran Church.

Come be part of it.

“As the deer longs for flowing streams…” Palestrina’s Sicut Cervus is one of the most achingly beautiful pieces in the choral canon, and we are so deep in it right now. 🎶 Hear where it takes us — Wide Open Spaces, Sunday May 17 at 4:00PM, Faith Lutheran Church. Doors open at 3:30. Tickets at dmvae.org.

What does the aurora borealis sound like when a choir sings it?

Ola Gjeilo wrote Northern Lights staring out over a winter landscape in Norway, overwhelmed by what he called a "terrible beauty" — serene and electrifying all at once. That piece is on our program this Sunday, alongside Ēriks Ešenvalds' Stars ("I know I am honored to be witness of so much majesty") and Jake Runestad's The Ways of Stars, inspired by astronomer Maria Mitchell: "No matter where you are nor what you are, you are a power."

This is what the night sky sounds like in five-part harmony.

“The silver swan, who living had no note…” 🦢 There’s something special about the moment a piece comes alive in the room. Warming up with Gibbons and loving every second.

Wide Open Spaces closes the season with a program that moves through the natural world, the night sky, and finally, the most personal space of all — who we are and who we are becoming. Featuring choral works spanning five centuries, from Renaissance masters Palestrina and Monteverdi to Ola Gjeilo, Eric Whitacre, Sarah Quartel, and Paul Halley's setting of Tennyson's Ulysses.

This is music worth showing up for. We hope you will.
