💔 A heartbreaking end for the Port Kennedy humpback whale.

Sadly, DBCA officers have confirmed that the approximately 9-metre humpback whale stranded at Port Kennedy has died overnight. The whale had been in poor health, and despite efforts to monitor and ease its suffering, it could not be safely returned to the ocean.

Perth Zoo veterinarians will collect biological samples and data to learn more about what happened. The carcass will then be safely removed from the beach. A shark alert remains in place, and Port Kennedy Beach is closed to the public until further notice. 🐋💔

One of the ocean’s rarest friendships began with a dolphin that didn’t quite fit in. 🐬❤️

In 2019, off the Azores, researchers observed a bottlenose dolphin with a spinal deformity swimming closely with a pod of s***m whales. The dolphin stayed with the whales over an extended period and appeared to be accepted and included by the group, despite being a completely different species.

Scientists described the unusual behavior as a rare example of long-term social bonding between different species. Sometimes, the ocean reminds us that family and companionship do not always have to come from the same species. 🌊

One tiny orca calf is turning heads with a very unusual face. 🐋🤍

A newborn orca has been photographed with a strikingly large white eye patch, making its face look very different from the typical markings we see on many killer whales. The calf appears to be staying close to its mother and moving with the pod—normal behavior for a young orca, which depends heavily on its mother during its early life. Orcas naturally have individual differences in their white markings, and some individuals can have noticeably larger or differently shaped eye patches.

What makes this little calf so fascinating is how clearly its unique markings stand out. Nature doesn’t always follow a perfect pattern and sometimes, those differences make one animal unforgettable. 🌊🐋

She was finally given a second chance then, just weeks later, everything changed. 💔

Peekachu, a 23-year-old female beluga rescued from the now-shuttered Marineland in Ontario, was among eight whales relocated to Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium this summer. She initially showed encouraging signs, eating squid, herring and capelin and adjusting to her new surroundings, but caretakers later noticed she was not consistently eating. Blood tests showed she was dehydrated and needed supportive care. While staff were providing fluids and medication, Peekachu suddenly died. A necropsy and additional testing are being used to better understand what happened, and Shedd Aquarium has said it will share more information when it becomes available.
