April Zhu
April Zhu is a freelance journalist and writer whose work in Nairobi focused on the geography of violence and the Chinese diaspora in Kenya. Currently, she is pursuing an MFA in Nonfiction Writing at the University of Iowa, during which she joined the Iowa City Press Co-Op and began working with acrylic monotypes. In 2016, while she was a part of the Nairobi-based artist collective Kuona Trust, she exhibited a solo show of oil paintings, “Young Woman, Welcome to the Holocene,” at Shifteye Gallery in October 2016. She was a Senior Editor at Guernica Magazine, a 2023 Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellow, a 2020 Blakemore Freeman Foundation Fellow, as well as the producer of Until Everyone Is Free, a Sheng podcast on the life and work of Kenyan socialist and freedom fighter Pio Gama Pinto.
