I'm glad to see abusers being called out and axed from the local music scene lately. The names I've heard have an active pattern of horrible actions connected to them. Mostly domestic violence and assault.
I feel like I've endured quite a bit of criticism over the years for making noise about seeing predators at shows and in "cool" bands, or working at local venues.
I've for sure been kicked out of circles, removed from shows I had committed to playing, and deliberately canceled shows in the cause of speaking up for victims/survivors of people affiliated with the scene.
The way I've always seen it is this:
I'm not going to knowingly play a show with someone who is the reason why other people aren't comfortable or safe coming to see my set.
I'd sooner not play at all than share a stage with a predator. I don't care how big of a show it is, or what clicks it gets us axed out of.
I've walked away from too many people like that with egg on my face. I'm glad to see so many people sharing their stories and outing the predators who have been insulated and protected by the scene that I spent my entire life supporting and growing. We literally started playing shows so the other misfits and outcasts could have a safe and accepting place to come watch some crazy local bands, and be a part of the community...not to score points by being the COOL GUY in the COOL BAND and opening the doors to sh*tty people. They are the ones we were working against from the beginning.
If you see me associate with your abusers, let me know!
If you ever need help at a show for any reason, just let me know!
