Ski Bum Artist Art for Mountain Lovers

Inspired by her love of the mountains and the powder that called her there, portrait artist Sara Melzer began developing her most recent series upon arriving in Vail in 2006. A dual-degree holder in Studio Arts and Philosophy from the University of Colorado, her expressive technique incorporates a vibrant blending of India ink on photo paper. "I wanted to convey the energetic and free-loving nature of the goggle-tanned and wind-burned people I have come to know and love," says Melzer of her work. Expanding her vision beyond conventional paper surfaces, Melzer has gained acclaim by painting her lively portraits directly onto snowboards and is currently adapting the same method for use on skis, skateboards, and surfboards.
