Everyone meet Frances, aka Frannie!

This little one is a member of our Critically Endangered bongo family who was born to mom Fern and dad Howard early this year. Thanks to the support of Donna, one of our generous donors, we have the joy of welcoming and sharing the name of this calf.

Stop by and say hi to Frannie on your next visit!

Last week, members of the DZCA team were honored to attend the reopening of Mt. Blue Sky alongside our partners at Denver Mountain Parks Foundation, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, U.S. Forest Service and Denver Botanic Gardens.

Wildlife conservation on Mt. Blue Sky is a key part of our Rocky Mountain Conservation Program, and we're proud to be included in the reopening celebration of one of Colorado's 14ers and a cherished cultural landmark reached by the highest paved road in North America. 🏔️

🦜 Happy ! And what better way to celebrate than with some of the most colorful, clever, and charismatic birds on the planet?

At DZCA, we're lucky to care for some truly extraordinary parrots. From the striking emerald plumage of our military macaw and the bold, dramatic style of our palm cockatoos, to the rainbow brilliance of our lorikeets, the curiosity of our kea, the gentle charm of our Goffin's cockatoo, the remarkable intelligence of our African grey parrot, and so many more. 🌈

Parrots have evolved some of nature's most jaw-dropping adaptations. Their vivid colors communicate mood, attract mates, and signal status. Their zygodactyl feet (two toes forward, two back) give them an unmatched grip for climbing and manipulating objects. And their brains? Among the sharpest in the animal kingdom, capable of problem-solving, mimicry, and forming lifelong bonds.

Many of our parrots are Animal Ambassadors, which means you just might run into one popping up for a demonstration somewhere on campus. 👀

Last week, DZCA as part of our Great Plains and Rocky Mountain Field Conservation programs were proud to host a press event celebrating the completion of the State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) alongside our partners at Colorado Parks and Wildlife, National Wildlife Federation, and the Colorado Wildlife Federation. 🎉

The SWAP is a comprehensive, science-based resource focused on the status of wildlife populations across Colorado, with an emphasis on individual species and their habitats, helping forge new partnerships, strengthen existing ones, and inform policy to keep Colorado wildlife, and habitats, healthy and thriving.

This plan will guide Colorado's efforts to conserve the state's most vulnerable species and the habitats they depend on for the next 10 years. DZCA is already hard at work on several species featured in the plan, from restoring boreal toad populations and surveying American pika to protecting bighorn sheep through veterinary medicine and human-wildlife conflict mitigation.

Colorado's wild places, and the animals that call them home, are worth protecting. We're proud to play a role in making that happen.

Happy from Ady, Luci, Gunnison, and Maverick! 🐟

Whether they're gliding through the water, showing off their training skills, or just soaking up the sun, our sea lions bring pure joy to everyone who visits and today is the perfect day to take a little of that home.

Can't get enough? Make it official with a Sea Lion Adoption Bundle, available in partnership with Children’s Hospital Colorado! Adopt a sea lion plush and support the animals that call DZCA home.

We’re delighted to share that Hesty, our 15-year-old Sumatran orangutan, gave birth to a healthy male infant on Sunday, May 24! While all our baby births are precious, this is especially exciting for first-time mom Hesty and is a huge conservation win for the Critically Endangered species!

Hesty is already demonstrating strong maternal instincts and bonding beautifully with her son. Because Hesty’s anatomy closely resembled that of her mother, Nias, her dedicated Animal Care teams have spent years proactively training with her so she could voluntarily participate in both her own care and her baby’s care if additional support was ever needed. While the team was prepared to step in if difficulties arose, Hesty and her baby boy have successfully figured things out together, and both nursing and bonding are progressing well.

As expected for any new mom, Hesty is spending most of her time resting behind the scenes and keeping her baby close as they continue to bond and adjust together. Our Great Apes building may be temporarily closed to the public at times to allow Hesty and baby time to acclimate. Stay tuned for more information about member sneak peeks and when baby will make his public debut!

🦦 Happy from Bu and Pintar!

This lovable duo can be found in Village Hall running, swimming, snacking, and making the absolute cutest little squeaks. 🐟

As part of the AZA Species Survival Plan, Jai, Rocket and Slinky have recently moved on to new homes at other zoos, but Bu and Pintar are still here and ready to remind you exactly why we're all so obsessed with our Asian small-clawed otters.

Come say hi on your next visit! 🦦
