One of the most common questions we hear from artists and labels is:
“Should we press our records on 140g or 180g vinyl?”

The short (and perhaps controversial) answer:
weight doesn’t determine sound quality.

What’s the difference?
▶️ 140g Vinyl
Industry standard weight for most records
Slightly lighter and more flexible
Efficient for larger production runs
Great for the majority of projects

▶️180g Vinyl
Thicker and heavier
Often associated with “audiophile” releases
Feels more substantial in hand
Can be a great choice for premium packaging or collector editions

What actually affects sound quality?

The biggest factors in how a record sounds are:
🎛️ The mastering
💿 The lacquer cut
🏭 The plating and pressing quality

A well-mastered record on 140g vinyl can, and often does, sound just as incredible as one on 180g.

At Paramount Pressing and Plating , we work closely with artists, labels, and mastering engineers to make sure every record—regardless of weight—delivers the best possible listening experience.

We are so curious what other artists and labels prefer:
Do you usually choose 140g or 180g for your releases?

What Actually Happens Before a Vinyl Record Gets Pressed?

A lot of people think vinyl production starts at the press.

It doesn’t.

Before a record ever touches a puck of vinyl, there’s an entire precision-driven process that determines how it will sound forever.

At Paramount Pressing & Plating, it starts with:
🔹 Mastering for Vinyl – Digital masters don’t automatically translate well to wax. Low end, sibilance, and stereo width all need to be carefully managed.
🔹 Lacquer Cutting – This is where audio becomes physical. A cutting engineer carves your music into a lacquer disc in real time. There are no “undo” buttons.
🔹 Plating – The lacquer is silvered and electroformed to create metal parts (father, mother, stampers). This step determines consistency, longevity, and detail retention in your press run. * This is where the magic of comes in!
🔹 Test Pressings – Before full production, you get to hear the physical result and approve it.

By the time your record hits the press, the sound has already been shaped by craftsmanship, physics, and years of experience.

If you’re planning a release this year, ask yourself:
Are you thinking about the press… or the entire process?

Send us your questions/comments. We love to hear from you!

At Paramount Pressing and Plating, Audio QC means a real human listens to test pressings from start to finish to make sure the record sounds the way it should before full production begins.

Specifically, we’re listening for ticks and pops—unwanted noises caused by things like tiny bits of debris, plating imperfections, or pressing issues in the grooves. These aren’t part of the music, and even one stray tick can break the listening experience.

Audio QC also includes checking for:
Non-fill (that tearing or zipper sound)DistortionSurface noiseConsistency from side to side
If something’s off, the record doesn’t move forward. We troubleshoot the source—whether it’s plating, stampers, or press settings—and fix it before thousands of copies are made.

In short: Audio QC is the last line of defense between a great record and a disappointing one. It’s where craftsmanship meets obsession and what sets Paramount Pressing and Plating out from others.

Ever notice how much information is packed into a record label? 🎶

Artist.
Catalogue number.
Label imprint.

This image is a great reminder that long before streaming metadata and dashboards, the label itself was the database. Everything you needed to know about a recording lived right there at the center of the disc.

From Victor to Brunswick to Paramount, these labels tell stories about era, ownership, distribution, and sound—tiny design choices that now help archivists, collectors, and pressing plants trace lineage and authenticity decades later.

At Paramount Pressing & Plating, we still think about these details every day. The label isn’t just decoration—it’s history, documentation, and identity all in one.

Curious what future collectors will learn from today’s records?

What “In-House Plating” Actually Means (And Why It Matters)

In-house plating means the most sensitive step in vinyl production never leaves our facility. That allows faster feedback, tighter tolerances, and immediate corrective action when something isn’t right.

Outsourced plating adds time, cost, and risk. Keeping it in-house is one of the biggest reasons Paramount can maintain consistent quality.
