Yesterday, I got to do something pretty special: I went to my son’s school and talked to the entire third grade about what I do for a living.
And next week, they get to put it into practice.
I gave each group a little publicity project: come up with a product, book, person, or idea they want to promote, figure out who would care about it, choose a media outlet, create a pitch, write an ask, design a poster, and then pitch me the story when I come back.
They even have jobs on their teams: Planner, Writer, Designer, and Spokesperson.
But my favorite part might be their Team Promise:
“We will listen to each other, take turns, share ideas, and help each other when things get tricky.”
Honestly, that’s a pretty good definition of good storytelling and good teamwork at any age.
I’m especially curious to see what these third-grade publicists come up with. Something tells me I’m going to have a tough time saying no to these pitches next week.
