My name is Emma Claire and I am a multi-faceted visual artist. I strive to achieve consistency, remembrance, and integrity in everything I put my hands to. ‘Vexilum’ is a made up word I created at the start of my love for art and photography through instagram (winter of ‘14). Now, it has become the name of my shop.
‘As I Am’ is my first gallery opening at George Fox University where I am receiving my Bachelors of Arts in a few short weeks.
This is the story.
My process of creating art develops around me and is rarely streamlined from a place of intention. Rather, it is a reactive flow of actions to reflect my surroundings.
As I am, so is my soul.
For this display, my goal was to encapsulate the basic relationship of man to the world, and to instruct those to use the world as their mirrors. What I came up with was an expression of life and death within itself.
I have been challenged to empower analogy and metaphor lending relevance to biblical parables and mythical fairytales.
Much like the Israelites in the desert with nothing but the cloud by day and the fire by night, I had no direction to follow when creating these pieces other than my dedication to fill some space and my curiosity for the potential outcomes for my actions.
My curiosity lead me to the destruction of my art created over the course of my time here at George Fox. I chose to burn the coffin I had built and canvases I had painted to depict my process of moving past the darkness in my life.
As within so without.
I wanted to witness the entirety of my art’s creation and death.
I wasn’t torn up about the art pieces being lost because I was in control of their demise.
it’s losing items uncontrollably that truly breaks my heart.
From dust we rise, and to dust we fall.
I have concluded that only I can build my spirit and cannot change what happens around me, only my perspective can change.
As above my future is set, so below are the actions I take every day towards my goals.
As within is my spirit that is strengthened by the surroundings I have without control.
As I am creating, so is my soul enriched.
These scrolls are my pathway and guiding light and
The coffin is marred in corruption with feathers of nostalgia to wipe it away.
Its rough and not clean.
This is my path of good destruction.
I haven’t chosen it and I will not back down.
As above, so below,
As within, so without,
As I am, so is my soul.
