Happy National Red Rose Day 🌹

Our logo is a rose for a special reason. It nods to a performing arts tradition where roses were given to artists as a sign of a performance well done. Sometimes, roses were even tossed on stage!

Today, we’re celebrating the rose itself and all the artists, audiences, and unforgettable performances it represents.

And honestly, we do wonder why throwing roses on stage ever went out of style.

Jazz audiences listen differently.

They hear the conversation between players, the choices inside a solo, the way a song can shift shape in real time.

At the Newman Center, we’re lucky to have an audience that brings that kind of attention to the room.

Our 2026–27 Jazz Series features:

▪ Ravi Coltrane Quartet: Centennial Celebration
▪ John Scofield’s “Electrospective” featuring Oteil Burbridge, Larry Goldings & Adam Deitch
▪ Matthew Whitaker
▪ Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis

Today we remember Sonny Rollins, one of jazz’s great innovators, whose music was never content to stand still.

Sonny took risks, stepped away when he needed to grow, and returned with music that pushed jazz forward. His life reminds us that mastery is not a fixed place, but a lifelong pursuit.

It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Sonny Rollins. The Saxophone Colossus died this afternoon at his home in Woodstock, NY at the age of 95. “I think when the creative person ends, he continues in the next existence. I’m a person who believes this life isn’t the be-all and end-all of everything. A spiritual person doesn’t feel like that.” –S.R. (2009)
