Vittoria Ensemble

Vittoria Ensemble A Denver-based vocal ensemble specializing in music of the fifteenth through eighteenth centuries.

Mission Statement:

Vittoria Ensemble is a chamber choir that performs musical works of cultural and historic significance; these will include less frequently performed masterpieces in addition to frequently performed standards. The music that Vittoria Ensemble performs is intended to be challenging, profound and inspiring for both performer and listener, and may include secular, as well as sacred

, choral works. Generally such works will be drawn from the various genres that make up classical music, including such older forms as Renaissance Polyphony and Gregorian Chant and extending to contemporary music of the 21st century. Vittoria Ensemble will endeavor to utilize performance practices consistent with that of the composer’s time.

Get to know one of our long-time members, Howard, in his own words:
"I was one of the first singers to join Vittoria Ensemble when it was founded back in 2011. There were barely half a dozen of us--and no conductor--at the time, rehearsing in one of our living rooms. I have sung bass with the group most of the time since. My first exposure to singing early music came in my college days. I have been singing early and other types of music ever since. I appreciate that while Vittoria began as an early music ensemble it has expanded its repertoire to enbrace many other periods and styles including, on occasion, modern music. It is a great pleasure to rehearse and perform with so many excellent singers and conductors in a friendly but rigorous setting.

Over the years I have sung with a number of local choirs including Singers Master Chorale, Musicians of St. Clair, Holy Ghost Church professional choir, Second Avenue Singers and the Acapella Gold quintet. For a couple of years I was president of the Colorado Chamber Orchestra. I have a doctorate in music theory and composition. From time to time a variety of organizations have performed compositions of mine. Included are a few performances over the years by Vittoria Ensemble."

Get to know out harpsichordist, Zerek Dodson, in his own words: "Early music--of the Baroque, Renaissance, and earlier--has always held a special place for me. When I was little, my favorite composer was Vivaldi (not common for a piano student!) and some of the most lasting musical memories of my childhood include encountering the works of Josquin and Bach's Matthäus-Passion. As an undergraduate, I was fortunate enough to play harpsichord in the university's early music ensemble, where I first learned to realize a continuo line. However, after moving to Colorado to pursue my DMA in Collaborative Piano back in 2019 (immediately before the pandemic!) I had fewer opportunities to play or sing early music.

That's why it has been such a joy to work with Vittoria. I was very pleased when Vittoria's previous harpsichordist and my friend Jerimiah Otto recommended me to replace him in fall 2024. David McNeil (who I managed to surprise in my interview by recognizing the Fenaroli partimento I was asked to sightread) has been wonderful to work with. I really feel this position draws wonderfully on my long engagement with early music and continuo playing as well as my more recent experience as a choral pianist. The high quality of the ensemble, feeling of community, and being able to make connections and contacts within the Denver music world has been a true asset."
