Small Talk opens Thursday, March 2nd at the Buell Theater.

In collaboration with CPAC, Pattern is exhibiting a group of projects titled Small Talk at the Buell Theater as part of Month of Photography. Join us for the opening reception this Thursday, March 2nd, from 5-7 pm.

The pandemic changed the way that we communicate and connect. Unable to meet in person, we had no one with whom to discuss our lives, our obsessions and our discoveries. So instead, we made “small talk” through the creation of bodies of work, a tangible yet physically distanced way to speak each other.

This exhibition explores people and places we found interesting, collaborations with loved ones and detours taken from larger projects paused by the pandemic. If our broader practices are the creation of large, sweeping bodies of work, Small Talk is a photographic collection of our short stories.

Small Talk is a group project featuring Carl Bower, Daniel Brenner, Brendan Davis, Ryan Dearth, Juan Fuentes, Benjamin Rasmussen, James Stukenberg, Rebecca Stumpf, and Julia Vandenoever. Learn more about the individual bodies at the link in bio.

I didn't know how to originally approach this project. I began by building a relationship and trust with the group. At the time, I was transitioning from a newspaper photographer job, so it felt natural to show the evolution of one of the boys through the entirety of the program. Unfortunately, the boy flunked out halfway through. Then I pivoted to a video story, which felt daunting and messy. It became and continues to be an ongoing personal project that never feels finished.

Martha by Sian Davey is an intimate visual diary of adolescence, vulnerability, and transformation. I was particularly drawn to the book because of the photographer's previous work life as a psychotherapist. Sian acknowledges photography's potential to reveal deep aspects of the self, and a desire to excavate what is buried deep in family life, "the shadows" she calls it.

I first met John Davis, an addictions counselor, soon after returning to Colorado in 2015. He specifically works with teenage boys dealing with trauma, drug abuse, and violence. I was fascinated by his unconventional approach to therapy. His treatment exists while on the side of a cliff, revisiting a traumatic setting or pushing limits of physical and mental exertion.

For the past year, Pattern has been collaborating on a box set of projects called Small Talk. Unable to meet in person during the pandemic, we had no one with whom to discuss our lives, our obsessions and our discoveries. So instead we made “small talk” through the creation of zines and booklets, a tangible yet physically distanced way to say something to each other.

Tree and Soil by photography duo Antoinette De Jong and Robert Knoth explores the deserted landscapes and closed-off areas of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. Combined with historical material from the collection of naturalist Philipp Franz von Siebold, and scientific reports, the book illustrates how Japanese culture is deeply rooted in and inspired by nature, and how our planet has been profoundly changed by human activity. Many gatefolds and a dust jacket that opens to a large double-sided post of sorts makes one feel like they are there, exploring the haunting landscapes themselves.

‘Rewilding, Remembering’ explores a love of the land through food sovereignty. Exploring such topics as those working in harmony with nature, regenerative farming, heritage grains, wild foraging, and more - paired with poetry - the importance of living close to the land, and a deep love for it, runs through its narrative.
