We’re Looking for Sectional Coaches!

The Longmont Youth Symphony is looking for professional musicians and music educators to work with our students during our 30th Anniversary Season!

Sectionals take place on Monday evenings in Longmont, and coaches are compensated $50 per service. Coaches do not need to commit to the entire season—we’re happy to work with your availability.

30 years ago, a small group of people believed Longmont kids deserved a place to grow as musicians — not just take lessons, but play in a real orchestra, alongside other kids who took it just as seriously as they did.

That idea became the Longmont Youth Symphony.

This season, we're celebrating 30 years of rehearsals, concerts, standing ovations, and the thousands of young musicians who've called LYS home. 🎻🎶

One of the best parts of making music together? Inspiring each other.

One LYS parent shared this about their daughter’s experience:

“It was a wonderful opportunity for my daughter. I think she gained a lot from playing alongside other students, sharing information, and being inspired by them. Watching the more advanced groups perform challenging pieces seemed to provide a natural form of mentoring and motivation as well.

I was especially impressed by the way Mr. West led the students with such positivity and enthusiasm. His encouraging attitude created a wonderful atmosphere, and I am very grateful for the care and guidance he provided throughout the program.”

With multiple ensembles rehearsing under one roof, LYS gives young musicians the chance to see where their hard work can take them, learn from students at different levels, and be part of a larger musical community.

LESS THAN ONE WEEK UNTIL AUDITIONS!

Still wondering if Longmont Youth Symphony might be the right fit for your young musician? Don’t just take our word for it—here’s what one of our LYS parents had to say:

“My student does not have an orchestra or ensemble available to participate in at their school. The LYS strings ensemble provides a wonderful experience for them to start to gain the skills necessary for orchestra and ensemble work while also making friends with other young musicians. They would not have this experience or opportunity without the LYS strings ensemble. Thank you!”

That’s what LYS is all about: giving young musicians opportunities to play, grow, and make music together, whether or not those opportunities are available at their school.

Auditions for our Longmont Youth Symphony Orchestra (LYSO) and Longmont Youth String Ensemble (LYSE) are less than a week away! In-person audition spots are currently full, but video auditions are available for additional students interested in joining us this season.

Audition Prep Tip #4: Every Minute Counts!

Busy schedules happen! Even if you only have 5–10 minutes to practice, a short, focused session can make a big difference. Spend that time on the passages that need the most attention and keep building consistency day by day.

Remember: a little bit of intentional practice is better than no practice at all!

Day THREE of Audition Prep Tip Week!

Today’s tip: Practice Performing!

There’s a big difference between practicing an excerpt and performing it from beginning to end. Before audition day, give yourself a few chances to experience that feeling of no stopping, no restarting, and no going back to fix a mistake.

Play for your family, your friends, or even your pets. The more familiar performing feels now, the less intimidating it will feel when audition day arrives!

Day TWO of Audition Prep Tip Week!

Today’s tip: Practice with intention :)

It can be easy to play something over and over and hope it gets better. Instead, go into each practice session with a specific goal, make notes in your music, and take a moment afterward to think about what improved and what still needs some attention.
