We put our leaves on instagram— the good, favorable conditions in our lives that we deem “picture-worthy.” But did you know that grape vines only produce fruit when the grape is scared that it’s not going to survive? Recently, I was listening to Beth Moore speak on a podcast about this idea and it really stuck with me.
While grapevines prefer rocky, sandy soil, they also need abundant water during the growing season. And they need the Vine…the same applies for you and me. While fear and fruit are theologically incompatible, the basic premise exists: it is rarely under comfortable conditions that we will ever bear a lot of fruit. We need the rocky soil and we need to stay close to the Source of abundance. The adverse conditions in our lives have purpose in leading us towards the abundant life we were meant for. “Otherwise we’re all just leaves.”

**Read John 15 for more on this and also because it’s one of the best chapters in the Bible. And listen to The Happy Hour podcast episode with Beth Moore.
