Honoring Queen Lili'uokalani this AANHPI Heritage Month 👑

A monarch. A composer. A resistance fighter. Queen Lili'uokalani of Hawaii was all three...and so much more.

As Hawaii's last reigning monarch, she fought tirelessly to protect her people's sovereignty and cultural heritage against colonization. As a musician and composer, she created over 150 works, including the haunting "Aloha 'Oe," a melody that became a symbol of Hawaiian identity and resistance.

Her music was her voice. Her voice was her power. Even in exile, even in imprisonment, she refused to be silenced.

🧑‍🚀 (May 16 & 17) is about that longing: the ache of beauty passing, the refusal to let it slip away without fighting back. It's about making music while the sun is still in flight, even knowing it will set.

DPO closes the season with music that grieves, celebrates, and defies all at once.

Meet Lisa Read, Principal Oboe with the DPO 🎵

This May at , Lisa takes the spotlight to perform Oscar Navarro's "Legacy" Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra: a piece that celebrates the human voice in struggle, vulnerability, and power.

Lisa's musical journey spans from the Eastman School of Music to USC Thornton to the University of Colorado Boulder, where she earned her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Oboe Performance. But beyond the credentials, Lisa is a collaborator, a reed craftsperson, a teacher, and an artist who believes in fostering growth and curiosity in every musical encounter.
