This beautiful cello is the work of American maker William Whedbee made in Chicago, 2004!

After studying at the University of Chicago, Whedbee traveled to Cremona in 1976 to train at the Institute of Violin Making. He returned to Chicago in 1979 to help establish and develop the violin-making workshop at William Harris Lee, where he spent twelve years and built more than 400 instruments.

Since opening his own workshop in 1992, Whedbee has focused much of his work on cellos, building hundreds of instruments for musicians around the world.

Not your everyday viola...

The viola d’amore is one of the more unusual members of the bowed-string family. Popular during the Baroque era, it is held and bowed much like a viola, but with a rather unique construction.

In addition to its playing strings—often six or seven—it traditionally has a second set of sympathetic strings running beneath the fingerboard. These aren’t bowed directly; instead, they resonate along with the notes being played, contributing to the instrument’s distinctive sound.

Many viola d’amores also feature an intricately carved head in place of the scroll you’d expect to see on a modern violin or viola.

We’re excited to showcase this exceptional viola by Carl Becker & Son, made in 1950!

The Becker name represents generations of American violin making, beginning with Carl G. Becker (1887–1975), whose career spanned more than seven decades. In 1968, Carl G. and his son, Carl F. Becker, established Carl Becker & Son in Chicago, continuing a family tradition of craftsmanship that carries on today.

It’s a pleasure to have this viola in the shop — and we can’t wait to share how it sounds!

A closer look at this beautiful violin by Swedish maker Peter Westerlund.

Based in Västerås, Sweden, Westerlund is one of Sweden’s most prolific contemporary violin makers, having crafted hundreds of instruments throughout his career. Largely self-taught, Westerlund developed his own approach to violin making and has earned an international reputation for his work.

In 2021, he was awarded H.M. The King’s Medal for his outstanding contributions as a violin maker.

Westerlund’s instruments are more commonly encountered in Europe, making this violin an especially exciting addition to the shop!

On this day in 1837, bow maker Christian Wilhelm Knopf I passed away, leaving behind a legacy of craftsmanship that continues nearly two centuries later.

It’s always a joy getting instruments into the hands of young musicians and seeing their excitement as they begin a new year of music. We had a wonderful time helping students find their instruments, and we’re excited to hear where their musical journeys take them!

The scroll is one of the most distinctive parts of an instrument and a place where a maker’s individual style can really come through. From the shape and depth of the turns to the proportions, and carving of the eye, subtle differences can give each scroll its own character.
