🎨 artma Artist Friday Feature: Kellie Day 🎨

We were thrilled to welcome Kellie DAY Art into the artma family for the first time this year! Kellie creates vibrant mixed-media paintings layered with collage, sketches, and acrylics. Her artistic philosophy says it all, “I started painting seriously when I was 40. By seriously, I mean playfully.”

A Colorado-based artist, mom, and former U.S. Forest Service ranger and firefighter, Kellie is now an artist and passionate educator. Her creative collaborations include Trader Joe's greeting cards, The North Face T-shirts, and Alpinist Magazine.

Ready to make some art of your own? Kellie’s online class, 12 Days of Painting, is designed to help you loosen up, experiment, and create 12 little paintings you’ll love, all in manageable 20-minute sessions. Whether you’re a beginner, returning to painting after years away, or simply looking for a little creative spark, this is your invitation to stop waiting for “someday” and start making art!

What an incredible evening at Space Gallery !

Thank you to everyone who joined us for artCollect and helped make the night so special.

A huge thank you to Michael Burnett and Micky for welcoming us into Space Gallery and sharing this milestone exhibition with our community. Congratulations on 25 amazing years! That history, community, and commitment to artists was on full display in Silver Linings, a beautiful celebration featuring the work of more than 60 artists who have been part of Space Gallery’s journey.

We’re also grateful to Julia Martin Art | Sewn Paintings for sharing her work and artistic process with us. Julia’s layered textile works explore the unseen experiences people carry and how those experiences shape connection, memory, and identity. Through stitching, mending, and reworking materials, she approaches repair as an act of care and connection.

And thank you to our incredible artCollect supporters for making these gatherings possible: Kylie Russell, Chubb, 5280 Magazine, Colorado Craft Distillery, and Nothing Bundt Cakes.

Join us tomorrow evening at Space Gallery for Silver Linings, a special 25th Anniversary exhibition featuring work by more than 60 artists who have been part of the gallery’s journey through the years.

We’ll hear from Michael Burnett, owner of Space Gallery, about the gallery’s history and the exhibition, along with exhibiting artist Julia Martin Art, who will share more about her work and practice.

✨ artma Artist Friday Feature: Desmond O'Hagan ✨

A celebrated painter working primarily in oils and pastels, Desmond O'Hagan has built an internationally recognized career defined by technical mastery, expressive landscapes, and a passion for sharing his craft through teaching. An award-winning Master Pastelist, his work can be found in museums and collections around the world.

Desmond has also been part of the artma family since our very first event in 2001, and we're grateful for his continued support and extraordinary talent over the years.

As Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, we’re remembering why this work matters so deeply.

Meet Emmalyn, a 4-year-old artma kid artist whose protector was Spidey Stitch.

Emmalyn was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma shortly after her second birthday and spent much of her young life in treatment. For this year's artma, kids receiving care at Children’s Hospital Colorado created a drawing of their personal protector or fighter, someone or something that helps them feel strong, brave, and hopeful. The Glass Artists of Colorado brought their visions to life and Emmalyn’s Spidey Stitch was transformed into glass by Mike and Sandi Penfound.

For Emmy, Spidey Stitch protected her from “shots, pokes and doctors, and yucky medicine.”

Through it all, she also made time to be a kid. To dance and sing, play with her toys, paint dinosaurs, cuddle her stuffies, and enjoy her favorite things.

Emmy passed away shortly after artma, at just four years old.

This Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, we remember the children we weren’t able to save.

Their lives matter. Their stories matter. And they are why we keep working for more.

More research. Better treatments. More support for families. And, ultimately, more children who get the chance to grow up.

We carry Emmy with us as we continue the fight, for her, for every child with cancer, and for every family who has lost a child.

🎨 artma Artist Friday Feature: Mark Friday 🎨

Mark Friday describes making art as a privilege, an opportunity to immerse himself in a creative process that results in images and objects designed to “create wonder, stimulate the mind, and dazzle the eye.” For Mark, art is a way to push back against the mundane and make space for curiosity, discovery, and joy.

His lifelong involvement in art began with the influence of his father, a constant creative dabbler. Mark went on to study art in college and has been exhibiting his work since the mid-1970s. He began primarily with printmaking before migrating to the mixed-media assemblage sculpture he creates today.

Mark’s approach to art is grounded in experimentation, play, and joy. As he puts it, “I have come to realize that if art making is not a joyful experience, I am not doing it right.” And perhaps fittingly for an assemblage artist, he says the two most difficult parts of making art are getting started and knowing when to stop, the middle part is easy.

And if you haven’t experienced Mark’s work in person lately, this weekend is your last chance to see it in Art from Parts at nkollectiv Gallery. Come see Mark Friday’s work and discover the wonder he creates from the unexpected.

This is such a fun and interactive show, filled with smart, imaginative pieces made from found objects, discarded materials, and things that may no longer have a purpose until an artist sees them differently.

September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, a time to recognize the strength, courage, and resilience of children and families facing cancer.

Meet Adeline, a 6-year-old artma kid artist whose piece, 🌈 Rainbow, 🌈 began as a drawing and became something extraordinary. Each artma, kids and young adults receiving care at Children’s Hospital Colorado are invited to create a drawing of their personal protector or fighter, someone or something that helps them feel strong, brave, and hopeful. Talented glass artists with the Glass Artists of Colorado then bring their visions to life as one-of-a-kind glass sculptures. Adeline’s Rainbow was transformed into glass by Mike Penfound and Sandi Penfound.

Adeline shared that there are seven letters in both “Rainbow” and “Adeline,” and seven colors in a rainbow. But Rainbow means so much more to her. Rainbow reminds her, “When things get hard, stay cool and keep working.” And when she needs to, “cry if you need to then keep moving.”

Her words are a beautiful reminder that courage doesn’t always mean being fearless. Sometimes, it means letting yourself feel, finding comfort, and continuing forward.

This Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, we’re honored to share the stories behind the incredible young artists of artma. Their creativity gives us another way to see the strength, hope, and resilience that exists within the pediatric cancer community.
