Twenty-five years ago, what was meant to be a one-night gathering of friends, art, and community became something so much more.

With a shared determination to fund pediatric cancer research—and ensure no child runs out of options—Steven Adams and Joan Slaughter, alongside dear friends Alan and Valerie Appelbaum, Bari DeJaynes, Nikki DiTommaso, and many others, created the very first artma.

What started as a single evening has grown into a powerful legacy of impact, hope, and progress. 💛

Sneak peek 👀 The art is officially hung for artma, and we’re honored to feature a powerful work by Mark Travis (1952–2007)— a noted force in Denver’s contemporary art scene of the ’80s and ’90s.

This 1995 figural abstraction exemplifies Travis’s bold, expressive style and layered mark-making. We feel incredibly fortunate to auction this stunning piece, generously donated by Rebekah Robinson for the Dennis R. Hurt Trust.

We are incredibly honored to feature Shack in the Spring #2 by Beverly Buchanan (1940 - 2015) in this year’s Live Auction.

A powerful voice in the Outsider and self-taught art dialogue, Buchanan transformed historic Southern homesteads and handmade buildings into deeply moving works that explore memory, impermanence, and untold histories. Trained under Norman Lewis, her work is held in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the High Museum of Art.

Rendered in vibrant oil pastel, Shack in the Spring #2 (13" x 16") embodies her signature expressive mark-making — honoring resilience, ingenuity, and the poetry of everyday structures. Generously donated by Diane J. Mayer, this is a rare opportunity to collect a museum-caliber work while supporting kids with cancer.

We’re thrilled to feature ’s Celadon Ginkgo Box in this year’s artma Live Auction.

Created in his studio at in Denver, Garnett’s work centers on the ancient raku firing technique — a dramatic process where the piece is removed from a 1,850-degree kiln and placed into a reduction chamber. The resulting carbon infuses the glaze and clay with rich depth and organic character, making each piece completely one of a kind.

This celadon-glazed vessel draws inspiration from the revered ginkgo tree of Japan — a symbol of longevity and resilience. Traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremony wares, the soft pale green celadon finish adds a sense of quiet reverence. At 14.5” x 4” x 6”, this box is both sculptural and intimate — designed to safeguard meaningful notes, objects, and memories.

A masterfully crafted form. A symbol of endurance. A vessel for what matters most.

🎨 artma Artist Profile - Hartshorn

A fifth-generation Coloradan and signature member of the American Impressionist Society, Stephanie Hartshorn is known for her architectural portraits of rural America. Her work has been featured in Southwest Art, Western Art & Architecture, and other national publications.

For artma, Hartshorn submitted “The Dairy” (oil on panel, 12” x 16”), originally painted on location at a fifth-generation working dairy farm. Inspired by back-road “gems” with history in their bones, her work honors the quiet strength and legacy of the American West.
