SHEILA WATERS, a Calligraphic Life
by Julian Waters
Part 1 - The England Years

Julian will share many images and thoughts about his remarkable parents Peter & Sheila Waters, whose "first careers" were in England during the 1950s and 1960s. Their unique creative relationship started at the Royal College of Art, as pupils of bookbinder Roger Powell and calligrapher Dorothy Mahoney. At RCA Dorothy had succeeded her teacher Edward Johnston. Peter and Sheila both became preeminent in their respective fields of bookbinding and calligraphy. Sheila multi-tasked as a prolific map designer for publishers, bookbinding designer, calligrapher and illustrator, while raising three sons.

During Julian's first 15 years of childhood, Peter was full partner with Roger Powell at the Slade Bindery, Froxfield, Hampshire, carrying out immaculate designer-bindings for collectors and exhibitions. Sheila contributed her talents to many of their designs.

Peter’s leadership in saving the rare books damaged by the Florence flood of 1966 dramatically influenced the field of library conservation globally, and led to the family moving to the USA in late 1971 for his appointment as Head of Conservation at the Library of Congress. As a child of the 1960s, Julian witnessed much of the work happening around him, and later he collaborated on many projects of his own with both parents.

This is the first of two lectures. The second one, which will be about Sheila Waters’ career in the US, will be in October 2026.

Raoul Martinez is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
