This one started with JW, a very loved boxer who crossed the rainbow bridge, and the idea that somewhere up there, this goofy little constellation pup is still running around doing whatever the hell boxer pups do.

The tattoo had to feel like him, but also like that weird, impossible thing grief does where someone can be gone and still somehow take up SO much space in your life.

This is the first layer on a space octopus tattoo that I’m already wildly excited about. This is also the part of a galaxy tattoo where I have to hold my OWN hand and resist the urge to scream “TRUST ME.” The worth is doing exactly what I wanted, but right now we’re at a weeeeird place.

Galaxy work takes time because I’m not just filling space with blue and purple and throwing some stars on top. I’m building it in layers and being very respectful of the limits of tattooing that let you add more, but you can never add less. Some areas start with the darks (but they might get darker) and some places I’m jumping right in with texture (but it will have more color), and only some of the magic happens in the first pass.

A LOT of the magic happens in the passes after that.

So this is your friendly reminder that a tattoo can look very... weird, while the composition is actually coming together exactly as planned.

And this one? Oh, she’s going to be RIDICULOUSLY cool.

Finally got to add a topper to this leg piece I started on my wife Wendy Greycastle years ago. Gonna completely fill this leg eventually 🤘 way to sit through 4 hours on the knee, no wonder it’s been put off for so long 😆 Love how this totem pole of imagery ended up painting quite a scene, it’s gonna be all space up top connecting much earlier tattoos of mine 🫶

Three sessions in, and this one is starting to come alive!

Instead of treating a tattoo like a puzzle where we finish one little piece at a time, we’re building this one like a painting. Layers of color, light, shadow, texture, and detail slowly stacking on top of each other, getting this all to feel dimensional and alive.

There’s still plenty left to do, but I LOVE where it’s headed!!

So every once in a while, I’m going to let you see the tattoos mid-process, because the finished photo is only the final chapter. The messy, weird, colorful middle is where the magic happens. Making Progress Mondays. A little peek behind the curtain at how a custom color tattoo actually gets built.
