The Cape Playhouse

The Cape Playhouse Where Broadway Goes to Summer - Since 1927 The Cape Playhouse at The Cape Center for the Arts was founded in 1927 by Raymond Moore.

His vision was to create a smart, sophisticated summer theatre with some of the world’s most noted stage and screen professionals. The realization of Moore’s dream has since been recognized by The New York Times, acknowledging the Playhouse as the “Place Where Broadway Goes to Summer.” Today, 93 years later, the theatre continues to feature world-class talent in shows produced specifically for The

Cape Playhouse and is one of Cape Cod’s premier cultural assets. In addition to professional live-theatre experiences, the not-for-profit Playhouse is committed to youth programs and education, serving the local community. The historic theatre is situated on an expansive 22-acre campus along with the Cape Cod Museum of Art and the Cape Cinema and is open for all to enjoy.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

“Charmingly witty and touching.” - Broadway.com

September 2 - 19

Conceived by Rebecca Feldman
Additional Material by Jay Reiss
Music and Lyrics by William Finn
Book by Rachel Sheinkin

Directed by Claybourne Elder
Choreographed by Charlie Williams

Set within the pressure-filled world of a middle school spelling competition, THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE is a smart, high-energy musical comedy that blends quick wit, catchy songs, and genuine warmth. What begins as a simple contest quickly becomes a joyful theatrical romp, filled with unexpected laughs and moments of heartfelt honesty.

At the center of the story are six endearingly quirky spellers, each stepping up to the microphone with impressive vocabulary skills, and very real emotional stakes. As the competition unfolds, their confidence, vulnerabilities, and personal histories are revealed, transforming the spelling bee into a coming-of-age experience shaped by hope, pressure, and the need to be noticed. Overseeing the event is a group of well-meaning but hilariously flawed adults who add to the chaos and charm.

While the show delivers nonstop humor and playful surprises, its greatest strength lies in its compassion. Beneath the comedy is a sincere celebration of individuality, resilience, and the courage it takes to stand in the spotlight. Uplifting, funny, and quietly moving, SPELLING BEE offers a joyful night of theatre that stays with you long after the final word is spelled.

2026 Season Show Feature: MEAN GIRLS

“A welcome splash of summer fizz!” - The Telegraph

August 12 – August 29

Book by Tina Fey
Music by Jeff Richmond
Lyrics by Nell Benjamin

Based on the Paramount Pictures film ‘Mean Girls’

Directed and Choreographed by Al Blackstone

Set in the familiar halls of high school and fueled by sharp humor and big-hearted storytelling, MEAN GIRLS is a contemporary musical comedy that explores what it really means to fit in, and when it’s braver to stand apart. With wit, warmth, and plenty of laughs, the show takes a smart look at friendship, identity, and the choices that shape who we become.

At the center of the story is Cady Heron, a bright and well-meaning teenager navigating public school for the first time. Drawn into the orbit of the school’s most powerful clique, Cady finds herself caught between belonging and doing what’s right. As social lines are tested and loyalties shift, she learns that kindness, accountability, and self-awareness matter far more than popularity.

Based on Tina Fey’s iconic film, MEAN GIRLS delivers theatrical spectacle with a modern edge. But what gives the show its staying power is its heart. Beneath the comedy is a generous, thoughtful story about empathy, confidence, and the importance of lifting one another up, even when it’s hard.

This production embraces the musical’s energy and humor while grounding it in characters and themes that resonate across generations. Whether you’re familiar with the film or experiencing the story for the first time, MEAN GIRLS offers an evening of theatre that’s entertaining, relatable, and surprisingly moving.

2026 Season Show Feature: Hairspray

“A sweet, infinitely spirited, bubblegum-flavored confection!” – Variety

Book by Thomas Meehan, Mark O’Donnell
Music by Marc Shaiman
Lyrics by Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman

Based on the New Line Cinema film, written and directed by John Waters

Directed by Meredith McDonough
Choreographed by Felicity Stiverson

Set in 1960s Baltimore and bursting with infectious energy, Hairspray is the feel-good musical comedy that proves joy can be revolutionary. Beneath its high-octane dancing and irresistible pop-infused score is a story about inclusion, courage, and the power of showing up exactly as you are.

At the center of the story is Tracy Turnblad, an unapologetically optimistic teenager who dreams big, dances bigger, and refuses to accept a world divided by appearance or race. As she fights for her place on a popular TV dance show, Tracy sparks a movement that challenges the status quo—with humor, heart, and a whole lot of hairspray.

Packed with show-stopping numbers like “Good Morning Baltimore,” “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” and “Welcome to the 60s,” Hairspray delivers Broadway spectacle at its most exhilarating. But what makes the show endure is its generosity of spirit. It celebrates community, champions acceptance, and reminds us that progress begins when ordinary people choose to do something extraordinary.

This production embraces the musical’s full scale and joyful momentum, creating an experience that’s as uplifting as it is entertaining. Hairspray is perfect for audiences of all ages—whether you’re revisiting a favorite or discovering it for the first time.

You can’t stop the beat—and you won’t want to miss it.
