Myspace's owners have broken their silence, and they say the platform's story isn't finished. Brothers Chris and Tim Vanderhook, who bought the site from News Corp in 2011 through their company, appear in Tommy Avallone's new documentary Myspace, where they detail how much money they poured into it and vow they aren't done.
"We still own Myspace. We are stewards of the Myspace brand at this point, and we are going to relaunch Myspace," Chris says in the film. "We're just waiting for the right time to do it. And if that one doesn't work, we'll do it again."
The origin story is its own piece of internet lore. To get the deal done, the brothers issued a fake press release announcing Justin Timberlake had joined their acquisition team, before they had ever spoken to him. It worked. They picked up the site for $35 million, six years after News Corp had paid $580 million for it. The relaunch that followed, built on courting artists and advertisers, cost them a reported $150 million and never took.
Reviewers at Hot Docs noted the film leans heavily on the business side of the story. Whether a genuine relaunch materializes remains an open question, but the owners are clearly watching the moment.
