Hello and Happy Spring! I am excited to see the upcoming release of "Napako" from TAMU Press. It tells the creation story of the Coahuiltecan People from the San Marcos Springs, which have existed for over 11,000 years in Central Texas. If you have never heard the story, it is a beautiful story of the human spirit reaching the upper world, Earth, after being trapped in the underworld, underwater. Maria Rocha is a wonderful story teller.

Thousands of years later, I recognize these springs as a vital lifeline between two worlds, intrinsically connected and essential for survival.

Stop by and visit me at Storypalooza! I will have an engaging display about field guides, visitors can view a variety of guides and create their own to take home. I will also share some of my favorite picture books about nature. Non-fiction reading is fun. ❤️

Of course you can pick up a signed copy of "Blindcat and Tadpole" and ask me about what I'm currently working on.

An international dive team found the blind catfish Prietella lundbergi--the first live specimen found in nearly 30 years! Now scientists will be able to sequence its DNA and fit it into the tree of life. 🤍

Today marks one year since the publication of Blindcat and Tadpole! This elusive species was brought to my attention by a former park ranger and a beautiful mural in downtown Del Rio. I am proud my story has been published. Every creature has its own niche. ❤️

While I wish I could tell you I have a set publication date for book #2, I am slowly working toward this goal. Life is busy, and I cherish the time I spent writing and collaborating on Blindcat and Tadpole. .by.bianka created the sensational illustrations that accompany the story. Here's to another year of more adventures!

And just imagine... A Mexican Blindcat could have been wandering in aquifers since the publication of this book without eating a single bite! Who is best adapted to their habitat? 😉

I've been quiet on social media... Burnout from all the news.

Here's a photo from my volunteer workspace at the Recent Invertebrates/Herpetology Lab at the Sam Noble Museum of Natural Science! Writing stories about local wildlife inspires me to learn more and more. Yesterday I cataloged various species of caddsisflies (Order Trichoptera).

I'm slowly working on my second book, and I'm always looking for inspiration. Cheers to all the naturalists who are out there every day, searching for new species and caring for our beautiful planet. ❤️ Hopefully I'll get to go out on some field work soon 🤞

The Metropolitan Library System has invited me to speak at their 8th annual LitFest on August 23!

I will host a small discussion panel at 2pm with author Barbara Lowell, who has written non-fiction children's books from leveled readers on professional athletes and human anatomy, to illustrated histories of Miep Gies during WWII.

I'm excited to meet local authors and of course, sign copies of "Blindcat and Tadpole" at Second Story Bookstore after the discussion panel. See you there!

My condolences to everyone affected by flooding in Central Texas. I am sorry to families who lost children, friends who lost neighbors, and people who lost their homes in the terrifying, raging flood waters.

I have practiced meteorology and issued forecasts, I wrote about flash floods and species who live in Texas freshwaters, and most importantly I am raising children--this tragedy is too much. Nature is so fragile yet more powerful than words can describe. My heart aches.

My family enjoyed this book written and illustrated by

Itzel goes into the jungle in search of a large, mythical snake that will bring rain to her grandmother's farm. She encounters her "tonal," or her protective spirit, in the form of an ocelot. Along the way, they pair up with other animals unique to Central American forests. Itzel listens to the animals and believes in the stories of her ancestors.

Beautiful illustrations and a soft, simple narrative.
