Manzanitas (Arctostaphylos sp.) are amazing plants. Blood red skin-like bark that covers a muscley twisted form is their most iconic feature, but their sun-bleached dead wood and small bifacial leaves are also quite stunning.
California is blessed with over 100 species and subspecies of manzanita. Most of these species are adapted to uniquely harsh soil and environmental conditions. The low-nutrient, well draining soils; and the wind, sun and snow that they tolerate, cause them to take dramatic shapes.
This cascade style manzanita, complete with a perfect live vein and bleached white dead wood, has survived drought, snowstorms, clearcut logging and road development.
