One more night until opening!

AND THEN… WE BUILT THE HAUNTED FOREST. 🌲😈
📖 20 YEARS OF HAUNTED FOREST HISTORY — THE FINAL CHAPTER
Once Don had the idea to move the haunt into the forest, there was just one small problem…
We had to actually build it! 😂
In the spring of 2006, Don Schuster, Mark Phillips, Tom Tallman and the entire Schuster family got to work.

They even traveled to Missouri to find old cotton wagons that could be modified to transport guests out to the forest.

The first Haunted Forest may have been a little… hokey… by today's standards.

But it was a huge success.

And it kept growing.

Over the years, the Haunted Forest has evolved from college volunteers and community actors into the dedicated team of performers, builders and behind-the-scenes crew who spend months preparing the forest every fall.

And tomorrow…

We celebrate 20 YEARS of it! 🎃🌲👻

Two more sleeps until the forest awakens...

📖 20 YEARS OF HAUNTED FOREST HISTORY — CHAPTER 3
The haunted corn maze came with its challenges. Drought conditions made the corn harder to work with, and managing the flow of guests through the maze became increasingly difficult.

Then, one night, Don Schuster stood looking out over the drought-stricken maze.
And instead of seeing a problem…
He saw the forest. 🌲👀
Why not move the haunt into the woods?
And that little idea would change everything.
Tomorrow, we finally enter the forest.

👻 DAY 3 — WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23
THE HAUNTED HAYRIDE GROWS! 🚜👻
📖 20 YEARS OF HAUNTED FOREST HISTORY — CHAPTER 2
The little Haunted Hayride didn't stay little for long!
By its fifth year, the event had grown to:
🚜 8 wagons
👻 Around 100 actors
🏚️ Scary scenes throughout the farm
🙌 Community volunteers bringing it all to life
The event had become a huge community effort, with scenes even created through a Deerfield Community Center outreach program with Thompson Correctional Center.
With the success of the Haunted Hayride, we decided to add some fright into the corn maze.
Costumed actors hid among the corn, giving guests a whole new way to get lost… and scared, but corn is not the easiest to hide in or to build, so we had to come up with another way for Halloween fun.
🎃 3 DAYS UNTIL OPENING NIGHT!

👻 4 NIGHTS UNTIL OPENING NIGHT

BEFORE THE FOREST… THERE WAS A HAUNTED HAYRIDE! 🚜👻

📖 20 YEARS OF HAUNTED FOREST HISTORY — CHAPTER 1

As we count down to our 20th season of the Haunted Forest, we're taking you back to where it all began.

In 1999, Deerfield resident Phil Montalto approached Schuster's Farm with an idea: a haunted hayride fundraiser for the Deerfield Community Center.

Scary scenes were set up around the farm along a wagon route, and on that very first night, 199 brave guests climbed aboard.

The next year, even more people showed up… so we needed a second wagon!

One of those early guests was local NASCAR driver Matt Kenseth, whose excitement helped convince everyone that this could become an annual event.

And that was the very beginning.
