Iconic “Cocktails” Sign

The iconic flashing neon sign that draws “Irish folks” of all backgrounds into the Tipperary Pub was installed in 1952 when the building in the Cove Shopping Center was built. The pub was originally the Famous Door Lounge, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Wok who ran a Chinese restaurant there and lived upstairs.

When the Woks sold the building to a gentleman known as Big Ron in 1975, he changed the name to the Tipperary Pub and operated it as a lounge and restaurant until 2003, when it was purchased by the current owners, Dick Maggiore and Danny O’Connor.

The First Church on the Beach

Community Presbyterian Church was the first church built to serve the beach community in Deerfield Beach. In 1948 the original church was completed. When the new chapel was built in 1963, the original church was named Briggs Hall after Dr. Arland Briggs. Dr. Briggs served as pastor for the church for 29 years.

His wife Margaret Briggs served by his side and was a Deerfield Beach pioneer. She passed away recently at the age of 103.

Back to Back Hurricanes Devastate Deerfield Beach

The City of Deerfield was established in 1925. In 1926, it was hit hard by what was named The Miami Hurricane. It did considerable damage. The city was still recovering when in 1928 it took a direct hit from a category 4 hurricane with 140 mile an hour winds. This damaged almost every building in the city.

This hurricane, also referred to as the Okeechobee Hurricane, moved on to hit Lake Okeechobee where at least 2,500 people drowned. This made it the second most deadly tropical cyclone in the history of the United States.

Beach Erosion Solution

From the 1940’s to the early 1960’s, tremendous damage was done to Deerfield’s beach primarily by storms coming in from the Northeast. Our city became recognized as one of the most seriously eroded beaches on the Atlantic Coastline.

Thanks to the work of City Engineer Art Strock along with Dr. Per Braun a plan to construct a series of concrete groins with large rocks permanently attached was developed. It worked so well that today Hillsboro Beach is suing the City of Deerfield Beach.

Deerfield Beach’s Gambling Past

Originally built by William Kester as a packing house, William ( West Virginia Bill ) Stewart bought the building in 1938 and converted into a gambling casino and restaurant.

Originally named The River View Club it operated as a private club casino until 1947. Eventually it was converted into the Riverview Restaurant and was run by the nephew of the original owner, also named Bill Stewart. It was a great spot for seafood and slow cooked prime rib.

Dick and Mary Mowry Come to Deerfield Beach

When Dick and Mary Mowry first moved to Deerfield Beach in the late 1960’s the city had a population of approximately 15,000 and was just beginning a period of rapid growth.

Dick was one of the city’s first lawyers with an office in what is now The Cove Shopping Center. He was elected to the City Commission and as Mayor twice. They were also very active in Community Presbyterian Church.

Dick and Mary were original members of The Deerfield Beach Historical Society. Although Dick passed away a very short time ago, Mary remains active with the Society to this day with her special interest in the 1920 Deerfield Beach Old School House at 323 NE 2nd Street
